What Is Consonants? The consonant is from Latin-consonare which means sound with to form syllables. How many consonants does English have?  Most linguists agree that English has 24 consonants. Others recognizes there are 26 consonants.

Voiced consonants An easy way to determine whether a consonant is voiced or not is to place a finger on your throat. As you pronounce a letter, feel the vibration of your vocal cords.
