Realization of meaning

Working on the texts

Grammar: have to and must

30 min

Write on the board: Usually I travel to learn something new (Stuart).

Ask students what they think about these words.

Show a video about a traveller. Ask students what they understood from the video. Check comprehension, asking some questions.

Give the groups different texts about famous travellers of England (Sir Walter Raleigh, James Cook, Sir Francis Drake) and ask them to read carefully and give the main idea of the texts.

After that, ask students to read sentences 1-6 and decide if they are true or false. Remind students that must and have to have basically the same meaning. However, we normally use must rather than have to to show the speaker’s personal feelings or wishes, for example:

We really must book our flight soon.

You have to change in Milan.

Share ideas. Guess the theme of the lesson.

They watch a video. Then answer the questions.

They work on the given texts. They work in groups, giving the main idea on the posters.

They complete the grammar explanation.

They do the exercise. Then they make the conversation with these expressions:

How long does it take?

How far is it…?

When do you want to leave?

It takes…

I’d like to book…

How can I get to…?
