«Лингвострановедческий урок "The Norman Conquest". Рабочий лист»
Read the texts and mark the sentences T (true) or F (false).
A. When King Edward of England died, he didn't have any children, so there were different people who wanted to become the next king. One of them was William of Normandy, the grandson of Edward’s nephew. William said that Edward promised to make him the King. William decided to come to England to take the throne. He gathered a large army and crossed the English Channel in ships. On October 14, 1066, William's army fought the English army at the Battle of Hastings. William won and became the new King of England. People called him William the Conqueror, because he conquered England.
B. William the Conqueror came from Normandy, a region in northern France. He was a very strong and smart ruler, and when he became King of England, he brought many changes. William wanted to control all of England, so he made new laws and reorganised the army. His people collected information about all towns and cities of England: how many people lived there, what they produced, what professions were the most popular. They put all this information into a book called The Doomsday Book. Historians still use it to learn about Old England.
C. One of the first things William did as king was to build a strong castle in London to show his power. This castle became known as the Tower of London. It was built on the River Thames in 1066. The Tower was used for many things. It was a royal palace, a fort, a prison and even a zoo. The Tower of London became a place where the king and his family lived, but also a place where enemies were locked up. It helped William control the people of London and protect the city. Nowadays it is a museum.
D. When William the Conqueror became king, he brought many Normans with him. The Anglo-Saxons spoke Old English, but the Normans spoke French. This is why English today has many words that come from French, especially in areas like law, government, and art. For example, words like "judge”, “prison”, “army”, “music”, “literature”, all come from French. At first, the two languages were spoken side by side. Over time, Old English and Norman French mixed together, and this helped form the modern English language we use today.
