London is the capital of Great Britain
London is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and commercial centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in Europe. Its population is about eight million people.
London is divided into the following parts: the City, Westminster, the West End, and the East End.
The heart of London is the City, its financial and business centre. A lot of banks, offices and companies are situated there.
- There are some famous ancient buildings in the City.The most impressive one is the St.Paul’s Cathedral, the greatest of English churches. It was build in the 17 th century by Sir Christopher Wren.
Tower of London
- The Tower of London was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1066 rebuilt by William the Conqueror. It was used as a fortress, a royal palace, and a prison. Now it is a museum.
Tower Bridge
Not far from the Tower of London is Tower Bridge, built across the Thames in 1894.
Westminster Abbey
Opposite the Houses of Parliament is Westminster Abbey. It is a very beautiful church built over 900 years ago.
Buckingham Palace
Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the Queen. It was built in the 18 th centure and rebuilt later by the architect John Nash. Nash began his work in 1825, but the palace was completed until 1837. The first Queen to live there was the young Queen Victoria.
Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is the centre of the West End. Here we find most of big shops, hotels, museums, art galleries, theatres and concert halls.
Tate Gallery
It is the Tate Gallery. This picture gallery was founded in 1897. The Tate Gallery has rich collections of pictures and also a large sculpture collection.
Albert Hall is one of the biggest Concert Halls in London.
Fleet Street
Fleet Street is one of the central streets of the British capital with the editorial offices of many English newspapers and magazines.
Royal Greenwich Observatory is the oldest scientific institutions in Great Britain .
British Museum
The British Museum was founded in 1753. It has many departments covering a vast variety of subjects. The library of the British Museum has a very big collection of books and monuscripts both old and new. This is a Reading-Room in the British Museum.
Hyde Park
In the West End there are wide streets with beautiful houses and many parks, squares and gardens.

To the east of Westminster is the East End, an industrial district of the capital.
Speaking about London, you must keep in mind that it is the city of contrast.
Hyde Park is one of the most popular and largest parks in London. It is famous for its Speaker’s Corner.
