Teacher : Hello, dear guests!

Teacher : We are very glad to see you today.

Teacher : Christmas! Our party is devoted to the most interesting, the most important, the most beautiful, and of course, the most favourite holiday among all people all over the world we congratulate you on this holiday and wish you ‘Merry Christmas’! We wish you to be always happy, healthy, wealthy and wise!

Teacher : What associations do you have with this holiday? (tree, snowman, Santa, snowflake, candy canes, star, bells, candles, elf, presents, deer, stocking, angels, carols, mistletoe, decoration, turkey).

Teacher : So, let’s play the game. We have got 2 groups. Each group should choose the category where is the question and try to give the right answer. For your answers you‘ll get points.

Обычай дарить подарки на Рождество окончательно утвердился в Британии только в викторианские времена (1837-1901 гг.). До этого подарками обменивались на Новый Год.

Обычай складывать подарки в чулок или носок тоже связан с викторианской Англией. Для него существует такое объяснение: "Рождественский дед" путешествовал по воздуху и проникал в дома через дымовую трубу. Спускаясь в один из домов, он обронил несколько золотых монет в носок, который повесили сушиться над очагом. С тех пор в Рождественский Сочельник на камин стали вывешивать "носки и чулки в надежде, что туда что-нибудь упадет".

Британцы первыми начали украшать дом и дарить в подарок висячие растения - такие, какплющ и омела. Растения должны были очищать дом от злых духов и напоминать о том, что весна не за горами. Королевские особы в середине прошлого века переняли германский обычай наряжать елку: первая елка была установлена в Виндзорском замке в 1841 г.

Самый популярный товар в декабре - красные колпаки Санта-Клауса и очки с большим красным носом. Купив это замечательное украшение, все немедленно надевают его. Действительно, смешно видеть типичного джентльмена в котелке и в клоунских очках с носом. В Сочельник лондонские улицы вымирают. Англичане сидят весь праздник дома, выбираясь только в церковь.

По традиции за рождественским обедом принято собираться всей семьей, а праздничный стол украшают традиционные блюда - для каждой страны свои. В Англии обязательные блюда на Рождество - запеченная в духовке индейка под соусом из крыжовника и рождественский пудинг.
