Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born on the 6 th of June (old style on the 26 th of May), 1799 in Moscow in the noble family.

The poet’s father came from an aristocratic family. His father was the retired major. On the mother’s side he had African ancestors. Pushkin grew up in a well-educated family.

Alexander had a sister and a brother.
Alexander’s great-grandfather – Abraham Petrovich Hannibal. He was a Russian military engineer, general, and nobleman of African origin. Kidnapped as a child, Gannibal was taken to Russia and presented as a gift to Peter the Great.
French governesses, his grandmother Maria Alexeevna and the famous nanny Arina Rodionovna took part in Pushkin`s behaviour.
When he was twelve he was selected to be among the thirty students in the first class at the lycee in Tsarskoye Selo. Soon he started to write romantic poems.
Pushkin was married to Natalia Goncharova on February 18, 1831, in Moscow.
He supported the Decembrist revolt of 1825 and wrote political poems.
The government did not like such poems, and A.S. Pushkin was exiled to the South of Russia (1820-1824), then to village near Pskov.
On the 29 th of January in 1837 he was killed in a duel defending his wife’s honor.
The most famous works of Alexander Pushkin are ‘Yevgeny Onegin’, ‘Boris Godunov’, ‘The Captain’s Daughter’, ‘The Queen of Spades’, ‘Ruslan and Ludmila’ and many others.
Pushkin wrote poems, novels, stories many years ago, but they are popular nowadays and millions of people admire them. Some of his novels are staged in theatres. His books play an important role in the development of literature and culture in our country.
