Ghost of Christmas Past
The Ghost of Christmas Past is a strange, otherworldly creature which shimmers and flickers like a candlelight, constantly changing in appearance as it reflects Scrooge's memories, old and new. As one memory comes sharply into focus another fades. As the Spirit represents Scrooge's youth so it can appear youthful, and its skin is of the "tenderest bloom"; but as Scrooge is now old so the Spirit will also appear old, to reflect this.

Ghost of Christmas Present
The Spirit shows Scrooge the joys and the hardships experienced by his fellow Man during one Christmas Day, that of the present, taking Scrooge to a joyous market with people buying the makings of Christmas dinner; to celebrations of Christmas in a miner's cottage, a lighthouse, and at his own nephew Fred's Christmas party. A major part of this stave is taken up with Bob Cratchit and his family, who, although poor, love each other and delight in each other's company. During the family feast we are introduced to Cratchit's youngest son, Tiny Tim, who, despite his disability remains full of Christian spirit and happiness.

Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come
Like the Future itself, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is unknown, mysterious and silent, and Scrooge fears his message most of all. When the Spirit wishes Scrooge to look at something or to follow him he simply points. The Victorians believed ghosts had the power to see the future, including people’s deaths, and in the novella the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come reveals to Scrooge his own death. The Spirit shows Scrooge that his future fate is not set in stone or written on his gravestone but can be changed – by changing his actions in the present.

Stave five
Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning a changed man. He makes a large donation to the charity he rejected the previous day, anonymously sends a large turkey to the Cratchit home for Christmas dinner and spends the afternoon with Fred's family. The following day he gives Cratchit an increase in pay, and begins to become a father figure to Tiny Tim. From then on Scrooge treats everyone with kindness, generosity and compassion, embodying the spirit of Christmas.
