Human rights

What are human rights?

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, skin colour, religion, language, or any other status are. We are all equal in our human rights without discrimination.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees international human rights. The United Nations General Assembly passed this document on December 10th, 1948 in New York. It has thirty articles and protects the right to life, work, housing, etc.

It consists of 30 articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions and laws.

Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states:“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

Human rights are inalienable. They should not be taken away, except in specific situations. For example, the right to liberty may be restricted if a person is found guilty of a crime by a court of law.

Non-discrimination in nationality, religion, sex or any other status is a cross-cutting principle in international human rights law.

Human rights mean both rights and obligations. While we are entitled our human rights, we should also respect the human rights of others.

There are still many people who don’t know their rights.

All human rights are indivisible, whether they are civil and political rights, such as the right to life, equality before the law and freedom of expression; economic, social and cultural rights, such as the rights to work, social security and education.

You have the right to:

• life
• have privacy
• education
• live in freedom and security

• have an opinion and express it to others
• equality before the law
• take part in politics
• practice your religion

Nobody has the right to:

• punish you without any reason
• take your things from you without your permission
• take away your freedom
• treat you like a slave
• torment you

Don’t allow yourself be uninformed! Know your human rights!

It is very important to be informed with your human rights.
