Sevastopol Sightseeing Tour

5 класс

Tourist manager: Good morning, dear guests. I am happy to greet you. We are welcome you to Sevastopol! Let me introduce myself, my name is Ilya. I am a tourist manager. I represent the tourist agency “The Crimean Treasures”. Today my colleague-guides will help me in our trip.

I am glad you’ve chosen a bus tour about Sevastopol, as it’s an ideal way for short trips. Today we’ll visit Sevastopol where you can meet different people and learn about places of interests of this great city! OK, are you ready for travelling?

Very well! Let’ take a bus and go to “Sevastopol Sightseeing Tour”!

Sevastopol has the richest history in spite of its rather young age. It is situated in the southwestern region of the Crimean Peninsular. The city is one of the busiest sea ports and a strategically important naval base of Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Translated from the Greek the name of Sevastopol means “majestic city”: “sebastos” – “majestic, sacred" and “polis” – city. It was founded in 1783. Sevastopol is a symbol of pride and glory. The history of the city is very interesting. Sevastopol has won glory in two legendary sieges becoming a symbol of courage. The city became a witness and participant of two severe defenses during the Crimean War and the World War II. That’s why we call Sevastopol the city of glory.

Sevastopol earned the admiration of the whole world during the years of the Crimean War (1853 – 1856). The world was amazed by the courage of Sevastopol’s defenders who for 349 days and nights held the city and showed great heroism. The names of Admirals Kornilov , Nakhimov , sailor Koshka Petr Markovich, surgeon Pirogov , nurse Dasha Sevastopolskaya, writer Tolstoy Lev Nikolayevich and many other heroes have been forever written down in the history of the first defense. In the memory of this defense a lot of remarkable monuments were erected.

The second heroic defense of Sevastopol dates to the years of the Great Patriotic War. Sevastopol was completely destroyed. In April 1944 the Soviet Army came to the city. In May 1944 Sevastopol was liberated! Since that time Sevastopol has become the hero-city.

So meet my colleagues. These are your guides for today. Have a good time! See you later.

1. Знакомство с основными достопримечательностями Севастополя.

  1. Остановка “Prymorsky Boulevard

Выходит 1-ый гид и в автобусе рассказывает о Приморском Бульваре

Alim: Good morning, dear guests! I’m Alim. Glad to see you!

We are on Primorsky Boulevard.

In the middle of the 19th century a large stone battery was constructed here and named Nikolas battery. During the Crimean War the battery was destroyed and the boulevard was laid out here. Look here! Just in front of us there is the Monument to the Scuttled ships. The Crimean War already began and it was decided to scuttle old ships here to block the sea entrance to the city. The ships were scuttled in two lines. Can you see a small cape to your left? That was the location of Alexander’s Battery. On the opposite shore there is a white round construction – it is Konstantin’s Battery.

The monument was erected just on the second line of the scuttled ships. There is a bronze double-headed eagle on the top of it with extended wings. Its height is over 16 meters. The monument was created in 1905 to the 50th anniversary of the first defense of Sevastopol.

Now we are going to visit the most beautiful city squares and the oldest one. It is Nakhimov Square.

My colleague Misha will tell you about this square. Thank you very much for your attention. Good luck! (Уходит.)

Guide 2: Hello, dear guests! I’m Misha. Nice to meet you!

LOOK LEFT, PLEASE! You can see the Monument to Admiral Nakhimov that was erected here in 1898 in memory of the outstanding Russian naval commander. Let’s come closer to the monument.

Pavel Nakhimov entered a naval college when he was 13 and since then all his life was devoted to the Russian Navy. He was famous for his personal courage and willpower. He had great popularity among common people.

Pavel Nakhimov showed his talent as a naval commander in November 1853. During the siege of Sevastopol, Nakhimov commanded the city garrison. Under his control the batteries were built, naval battalions were formed, reserves were prepared. People loved and believed him and were ready to fight under his command to the end. In June 1855 he was mortally wounded on one of Sevastopol bastions.

In Admiral’s hands you can see a sword and a telescope. On the front side of the monument there is a bronze banner, and below is the text of his order to attack the enemy. In the lower part of the pedestal we can see four high relieves showing the episodes from Admiral’s live. The total height of the monument is 12 m.

Now, let’s get in the bus! We’ll continue our tour.

Nastya: I have lost the way!

Guide 2: Now we are in Sapun Mountain. This is the next bus stop. Let’s listen to the next guide Yulya. Thank you very much for attention. Have a good rest!

Guide 3: Hello, dear guests! I’m Yulya. Nice to meet you!

An open museum was created in Sapun Mountain and a pine park was set up here. Also you can see Soviet and German equipment collected here. The memorial complex Sapun Mountain includes a pavilion, where people can see a 25- meter- long painting. There is a moment of storming the Sapun Mountain on the 7th of May, 1944. The picture shows the full- length figures of Red Army men, who are in the front of the diorama. Their faces are the faces of real people exhibited in the same museum. The memorial complex was opened in 1959.

The Eternal Flame and an obelisk can be seen behind the diorama.

The reconstruction of the battle is arranged on the mountain during the May Holidays.

Now we are in the Malakhov Kurgan. This is the next bus stop. Let’s listen to the next guide Bogdan. Thank you very much for attention. Have a good rest!

Guide 4: Hello, dear guests! I’m Bogdan. Nice to meet you!

Look right, please! You can see the next landmark. It is well- known the Malakhov Kurgan.

The Malakhov Kurgan 97 meters high rises above.

It was named after Captain Malakhov, whose house stood at the foot of the mound.

This mound went down in history as a place of bloody battles in the defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War of 1853-1856.

It was here that Vice Admiral Kornilov and Admiral Nakhimov were killed. The battle for the height also happened during the Second World War. In 1942 the mound was stormed by German fascist troops. Many soldiers were killed here.

On the mound there is a monument to Admiral Kornilov who heroically defended the area in October 1854. In 1958 a park was built on the Malakhov Kurgan.

There is an exhibition in the tower devoted to the military history of the mound.

Next sightseeing is the Panorama “Defense of Sevastopol”. Now I should go. Thanks for your attention. Armen will tell you about this landmark.

Guide 5: Hello, dear guests! I’m Armen . Nice to meet you!

The main avenue of Historical parkway conducts to a world known monument. It is a panorama telling about heroic defense of Sevastopol in 1855.
Panorama "Defense of Sevastopol 1854 — 1855 yy." was opened on the 14th of May, 1905. It is a round building with a dome. A diameter of a building is 36 m, height it also 36 m.

Panorama "Defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855" is one of the most famous examples of battle painting in the world. Nearly four thousand figures are drawn in the picture, including famous people in those events Admiral Nakhimov,  Pyotr Koshka, the first Russian sister of mercy Dasha of Sevastopol, surgeon Pirogov. Due to the scale of the picture, it creates the effect of presence in the battle at the top of Malakhov Kurgan.  The panorama was reopened by the 100th anniversary of the defense in 1954. On the ground floor of the building there is an exhibition dedicated to the Crimean War, to the creation and reconstruction of the battle canvas.  Our next stop is Chersonesus. Nikita will tell you about this famous sight.

Guide 6: Hello! My name is Nikita. I’ll tell you about Chersonesus.

You can go into the antique history of these places in Chersonesus that existed for about 2 thousand years. The thick fortress walls and tower, the city gate, the fragments of the ancient theatre, and also the streets , wells and public buildings of the ancient Greek city state remain here. The museum is interesting not only with archeological dig, but also with numerous cultural events. Ancient Greeks lived in the houses made of stone. They worked as farmers and craftsmen. They went fishing on the Black Sea. They also had boats and transported goods. In their free time they played music or board games. Only wealthy boys could attend school. Ancient Greek had a great civilization which many people still study and admire today.
