THE MOON IN MAY
(translated by T. Khayatova)
We home returned in May from far lands,
Fields and blooming gardens the Moon was lighting up,
Left the smoking sites of fire and killed enemies behind,
We knew victory was ours, the hope we didn’t give up.
Remember we with great excitement
For truth and justice honestly shed blood,
The graves of soldiers left in far lands
And the sadness of grey-haired brides.
Forever we’ll remember ruins, sorrow of breaking stones,
We won’t forget disasters, bitterness of losses,
And how we the proud name of soldier
Through severe battles suffering achieved.
In a distant spot through window see
The life comes in but not sorrow,
Soldiers’ hearts thump, feelings wreak
Meeting Motherland tears impossible to hold.
With open arms the country met us,
The people from Ukraine and from Rostov,
The River Don’s waves also wished us happiness,
And shtchi gave us the girl with turned – up nose.
The country works inspiring with freedom.
The miners give the coal, the workers melt the metal.
