All week I was thinking about the game.
My best friend Sammy and I talked about how we'd get our picture in the sports section of our school paper.
I woke up early on Saturday morning. But when I looked in the mirror, I knew I had a problem — a big problem. I went back to bed and stayed there. I was thinking what to do.
Ten minutes later my parents came in. "Hey, champ," my father said. "It's eight o'clock. Pre-game practice is at 9:30. You'd better hurry!"
I hid under the covers.
"What's happening?" asked my mother. She's a nurse. I said nothing.
"Perhaps, he is nervous," she said to my father.
"I've got some illness," I said. There were red spots on my stomach and arms and legs, and a few on my face. I felt hot and cold at the same time.
"Chicken pox," my mother said. "Let's take your temperature." She went to the cupboard for the thermometer.
"There goes the game," said my father. "I'll call your basketball trainer."
"Wait a minute," I said. "Don't call him. I'll take some medicine. I'll be fine. I must play!" My father waited in the doorway.
"Call the trainer," my mother told him. "You can't play," she said to me. 'You're infectious."
Later that morning I was sitting on the sofa in the living room. "I can't believe I'm skipping the game," I said. "Things happen to everyone," my mother said. The phone rang.
"I don't want to talk to anybody."
"It's your trainer," my mother said. She gave me the phone. "Hey, Nick. How are you doing?" "OK, I think."
"Well, it happens you're not the only one with the chicken pox," he said. "I'm not?"
"No. Three other boys came to practice with red spots. The game will be in two weeks. So get well soon."
Get well? I'd never felt better in my life. We will win. The doorbell rang. There was Sammy. "It's OK," he told me. "I've already had chicken pox. You look awful," he said, and smiled. "Thanks," I said, and smiled, too.
