Education in England
In Great Britain compulsary education begins at the age of five when children go to primary school. British children go to nursery school at the age of 3 or 4. Children are taught to sing, draw, they play different creative games. Primary education lasts for six years.
Primary school is divided into two periods: infant schools (pupils from 5 to 7 years old) and junior schools (pupils from 7 to 11 years old). Boys and girls study at junior school for four years. There they have classes, read and write, do mathematics.
At the age of 11-16 years they go to a secondary school. At secondary school pupils study English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Art, Music, Foreign languages and Physical training.
There are two different types of school:
state schools
private schools
There are schools run by the Government. These schools are known as State Schools and parents do not pay. They are financed by public funds, which means that the money comes from the national and local taxes. 90 % of children in England and Wales attend a state school.
State schools are divided into the following types: grammar schools, technical schools, modern schools, comprehensive schools.
7% of the children in England go to independent schools. Independent schools are known as private schools and public schools . There are around 2,300 independent schools in England. These schools set their own curriculum and admissions policies. They are funded by fees paid by parents and income from investments. Just over half have charitable status. All students at private schools must pay. The most famous public schools are Eton, Harrow and Winchester.
All students must take two very important examinations:
The Best U.K. Universities: University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of Birmingham, University of Manchester
English pupils have school uniform. A boy’s uniform consists of a special suit, a school cup, a tie and a blazer. A girl’s uniform consists of a hat, a coat, a skirt and a blouse. As usual their uniform is dark.
