The Water Station
There is a Water Station in Petrozavodsk. It is situated behind the monument to Peter I. It was built in 1975. It has a shape like a ship.
This monument was reconstructed in 1968. The architect is Rozenfeld. The station started to work on May 1976. The Water station included: a waiting room, post-office and a restaurant. There were not any shops in it. The ships went in a short area.
The Monument to Peter I
- On May 30, 1782 to honour the bicentenary of Peter I birthday the monument to him was founded on the Circle Square of the town. The authors are Barinov and Shreder. In 1978 the monument was transferred into the Onega embankment.
The Summer Park
- During his first visits of the Petrovsky cannon foundry Peter I began to plant the first trees of the future Birch grove around the palace…
Kirov Square
The Kirov square is one of the oldest squares of Petrozavodsk. This square has rather interesting history.
It used to be called Cathedral Square, Square of Liberty and Square of Republic.
There were three cathedrals: St. Peter and Paul’s, of Resurrection and of the Holy Spirit. In the middle of the square sat the monument to tsar Alexander II.
The Monument to Kirov
- There is a bronze monument to Sergey Kirov in the center of the square. It’s made from the pink granite. It was set here in 1936 and since this year the square has the name of Kirov .
The Russian Music and Drama Theatre
- Behind the monument to Kirov you can see the edifice of the Russian Drama and Music theatre. It was built in 1955 in the style of classicism by the project of Savva Brodsky. In the theatre can seat up to 800 people.
The National Theatre
- The National theatre is located on the opposite side to the Russian Drama and Music theatre. In 1965 the building was reconstructed according to the plan of the architect S. Brodsky.
The Puppet Theatre
- The Puppet Theatre was established in 1935. It has a united front with the edifice of the National Theatre.
The Museum of Fine Arts
- There are more than 5 halls in this museum. For example, the Hall of the Ancient Painting of Karelia, the Hall of National Arts and so on. There are over 10 thousand exhibits of painting, graphic arts, sculpture in it.
The Office of “The State song-and dance ensemble Kantele”
- This building was a female gymnasium. Now this edifice belongs to the Karelian song-and dance ensemble `Kantele`. The year of a birth of this ensemble is 1936.
The Onega tractor plant
- It is located in the walls of the Alexandrovskiy cannon foundry, the oldest plant of Petrozavodsk
- The Onega tractor plant produces tractors for timber industry.
Alexandro-Nevsky Cathedral
The temple was constructed in 1832 on donations of factory workers.
Lenin Square
Lenin Square is the oldest square in Petrozavodsk (232 years old). The idea to build a round form square in the centre of the town was set out in the first town plan made in 1773. Firstly it was called as Round square or Circle.

To the left is the common grave of those who fell in the Civil War and WWII, as well as the graves of the prominent Party and Government figures of the Karelian ASSR. The designers of the memorial complex are Eduard Andreev, Ernest Voskresensky, Ludvig Davidian and Eduard Akulov.
Governor Garden
The central part of the garden is occupied by the monument to G.R. Derzhavin, the first Olonets governor. The monument was opened to the public in 2003, during the 300-year anniversary of Petrozavodsk.
Severnaya Hotel
The hotel was built before the WWII according to the original project of the architect K. Gutin.
On the other side of the Lenin Avenue there are wooden houses which are in color harmony with the hotel edifice as well. These houses were built in the 1930s by the Finnish and Canadian architects.
The Railway station
The Railway station is one of the symbols of Petrozavodsk. The building has got an unusual facade. There is a big long spire on the roof.
In front of the station there is a semicircle square. It has got a name of the first cosmonaut Y. Gagarin. There are many shops and the telegraph office round the square.
Petrozavodsk State University
Petrozavodsk State University was established in 1940.
"Vasiliev’s slope"
The most popular fountain of Petrozavodsk is the fountain in Student's Avenue that was built by the architect E. Taev on June 29, 1996.
Petrozavodsk is one of the biggest centers of science and education in the North - West region of Russia.
There are 2 universities, some branches of Moscow universities and the conservatory in Petrozavodsk.
Sovetskaya Square
The Square is located between Lenin Avenue and Eremeeva Street near the Embankment of Onego lake. It was named Sovetskaya Square in 1981. A granite monument to Otto Kuusinen is located on the square and it faces the Onega Lake.
Petrozavodsk Administration
The four-storied building behind the monument was built in 1980. This is an edifice of Petrozavodsk Administration.
The Register Office
- The Register Office is the most beautiful building of Petrozavodsk. It used to be “Pioneers` House”.
- Practically every day a lot of people get married there.
- There are 17 000 assembly books (from 1971 to 2006) in archives of the Register Office.
Pushkinskaya Street
- At first Pushkinskaya Street was called Staropoliceiskaya one. The street got this name in 1899 because of it was the century of Pushkin’s birthday. In Pushkinskaya Street there are different buildings.
The National Library
- It is the biggest library of Karelia. It was founded in 1860 by Ribnikov P. N.
The Monument to Pushkin A. S.
- In 1966 in Pushkinskaya Street near The National Library the Monument to Pushkin was opened. Pushkin A.S. was a great Russian writer. The statue was made of bronze. The height of the monument is 4.2 metres.
“ The tree of wishes”
- This sculpture of twin city was based in 1996. The author is Cant Anderson. On one side on the trunk of the tree is an ear where you can whisper your own wish. If the bells ring, your wishes would come true.
“ The Fishermen”
- The sculpture of city Dulute was founded in 1991. The author of this sculpture is Rafael Consuegro. This monument symbolizes the labor of many people.
“ The place of meeting”.
- This sculpture was founded in 2001. The author is Igendalen. This sculpture is a symbol of relationship between Petrozavodsk and Commemorate.
“ Tubingen Panno”
- In 1994 twin city Tubingen presented a sculpture composition to Onego Lake embankment.
"Sleeping Beauty"
- It is a gift from La Rochelle, our twin city in France. It was made by Jean-Pierre Dusseine in 1999.
- A lot of people admire the beauty of the Onego Lake…
