An elementary school in the US is the lowest school at which children receive compulsory teaching, from the age of six. Elementary schools last for six or eight years and normally include a kindergarten for children aged five. In Canada the elementary school, depending upon the province, may be 8, 7, or 6 years in length. In Australia compulsory attendance begins at the age of 6 and extends to 15. The contemporary Japanese school system includes a three-year kindergarten and a six-year elementary school. Indian children begin an eight-year elementary school at the age of 6. To attend the elementary school, French children are to be from 6 to 11 years of age. As a general rule, elementary education lasts six years.
