“ Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know men” (Confucius)
At first sight the English seem to be restrained and deadpan. With their own buttoned-up emotions and unshakable composure, they seem to be extremely reliable and consistent for each other and for the whole world.
Literally from birth, English children are taught not to show their true feelings and suppress any lack of restraint so as not to offend to anyone accidentally. The appearance of propriety is what is the most important to the English. In this research work we meet traditions and laws of everyday life in England.
I wanted to learn more about English proverbs and how they reflect the character traits of the English. In my work, I found and translated English proverbs and picked up similar Russian ones according to their meaning. This work is devoted to the study of the English; this system is quite relevant today in the dialogue of cultures.
Possession of these lexical units allows you to express your thought more clearly figuratively and succinctly. The object of the study are English proverbs and sayings that reflect the peculiarities of the characters and lifestyle of the people in England.
Character of English people “ Least said, soonest mended ”(Чем меньше сказано, тем больше сделано) “Silence – is a gold” (Молчание – золото)
- From the very birth of English children are taught not to show their true feelings, that is simply suppress any incontinence in order not to offend anyone accidently . “You never know what you can do till you try” (Никогда не узнаешь на что ты способен, пока не сделаешь это). “None but the brave deserve the fair ”(Смелость города берет)Such impenetrability is the main feature of the English, and thanks to It as paradoxically as it is the whole world considers this completely predictable people to be completely unpredictable. The English, for example, loudly admire something not experiencing even the slightest joy, or they can portray a violent joy because in fact they are likely to be despised, worthy of their conviction.
Behavior
“ He who says what he likes, shall heard what he doesn’t like” (Кто говорит то, что ему вздумается, услышит то, что ему не понравится)
A true Englishman should always keep his head straight and proudly and don’t wiggle with upper lip, keep his leg forward and showing all his determination. “Little strokes fell great oaks” (Малые удары валят большие дубы)
However, in some special cases, it is permissible to express one’s feelings openly, for example, during sports competitions or when a person has returned, who has been long considered dead. But in these cases, strong emotions will certainly change the embracement.
“ If at first you don’t success, try, try, try again” (Если с первого взгляда не удалось, попробуй снова)
- “ He that respects not is not respected” (Если хочешь чтобы тебя уважали, уважай других)
“ Civility cost nothing” (Вежливость ничего не стоит)
The English believe that it is completely unacceptable to put nose in other people’s affairs. In complex of such traditions and morals that they have excessive curiosity and sociability can lead to the fact that they can offend someone.
- “ First come, first served” (Кто первый пришел, того первым и обслужили)
The queue is one of the few places where in their opinion is not forbidden to talk to each other even you are not introduced.
English families
- An English family - is a group of close relatives who pleasantly justify their desire for individuality and family retreating. The family represents the Englishman a luxury opportunity to behave himself as he wants and not as it should be. If don’t take annual vacation and holidays, family members are not eager to spend much time together. «Blood is thicker than water» (кровь гуще воды)Means that relationships within a family are more important and stronger than those outside of the family. In other words your family will always be there for you, no matter what, even if you’ve been apart or have said something unkind.
- Don’t be so surprised that your friends left you, you know you can always rely on family. Blood is thicker than water.
- Traditional English family something like that: working dad, sitting at home mum, their 2-4 children. But unfortunately it is far from the norm: 30 % of parents don’t register marriage, 10% of children are brought up by one of parents (of which 10% are fathers), and 2 of every 5 marriages end in divorce. « You can’t choose your family» This proverb was originally longer. “ you can’t choose your family, they are God’s gift to you as you are to them”. In modern times this has been shorten to you can’t choose your family, meaning the actions of your family members do not define you.
- Parents for Christmas and for children’s birthday fill up them gifts, and the rest time try to restrain themselves and generally prefer to provide children’s education to someone else.
TRADITIONS
- The English tend to longing for the past and nothing is more precious to them than any customs and traditions. In a broad case of the concept of tradition, it is understanding that something from the past is worthy passing the test of time and that’s why it’s should be kept, for example, bright-red mailboxes, for men short coat with hoods and wooden buttons, marmalade, weekend at last Monday of August. In England the tradition of rest days strictly observed “weekends” when the town’s people are trying to sunbathe on the nature. Probably it should be so. After all, it’s tradition!
ENGLISH HOMES
- “ The German lives in German
The Yankee lives in Oklahoma
The Spain lives in Spain
But The English lives at home”
- House and garden plays a big role in the life of Brits, it is mainly linked with the changeable climate of the country. Population spends all free time for the endless improvement of their homes without which no home can be considered the best
- The British are constantly busy as at the outside of the house so in the inside, installing electronic security and shower cabins, designing furniture and so on. « There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments» (В садоводстве нет ошибок, есть только эксперименты)
- Once in the garden the Englishmen does not know any doubts. Brits are very active when they leave the house
- When Englishmen begins to work in the garden, something incredible happens fro a while, he completely loses all his practicality and forgets about all his addictions. « I like gardening. It’s a place where I find myself when I need to lose myself.» ( Я люблю садоводство. Это место, где я нахожусь, когда мне нужно потерять себя.)
- Englishmen are managing to make miracle, even on a small plots of land a tiny garden or just a box under the window become in the imagination of the Englishmen his personal national park. Brits are very active when they leave the house. « We ought to take outdoor walks, to refresh and raise our spirits by deep breathing in the open air. » (Мы должны совершать прогулки на свежем воздухе, освежать и поднимать настроение, глубоко дыша на свежем воздухе.)
English FOOD and DRINKS
The traditional full English breakfast includes …In the weekend, they usually have Crêpes with Nutella, or the traditional lemon and sugar. “There is no love sincerer than the love of food.” ( «Самая первая и ранняя любовь — это любовь к еде».)
British are loyal to tea and consider it as one of a few really beautiful things that have ever come to England from abroad. They have assigned mystical healing characteristics to tea. “A place for everything, and everything in its place” (Всему своё место) They drinking a tea in any crisis situations. Only tea is able to bring the Englishmen out of shock and also serves as a reason being in a company. «The appetite comes with eating.» (Аппетит приходит во время еды.)
EDUCATION IN ENGLAND
- Those English children whose parents are well-off are most often given to some kind of «public school», usually with a boarding school. Parents of such children have a very positive attitude towards being their children in boarding schools , believing that as farther they are from home, as it is better to developing themselves. An alternative «public school» is a public day school. In such schools , there are occasionally a shortage of teachers, equipment and stationery supplies (though everyone can adopt a law according to which parents of lazy pupils can be sent to the prison). However the British give their children to the state or private school, the care they have is the same. A child should receive «good education »Don’t cry over spilled milk» – this saying means that you should not brood over your past mistakes. You can not change the past but you can change the future. Learn from your mistakes and be hopeful.
In these research work we learned life, history and people of mysterious country as England. Based on collected material, we made project about Englishmen and their life, and have known that there is difference between English and Tajik culture. Also we reviewed rules and features of speech and common manners in Great Britain, especially manners of greeting and communication. Knowing of these rules can help to behave properly in daily life of English society.
So proverbs make our speech richer, enrich our vocabulary, and it is just important nowadays. Therefore, this theme is relevant. Researched different proverbs, we came to a conclusion, that mentality of English people reflected in proverbs, in important genre of folk creativity. In many cases proverbs act like a set of rules, regulated the life of each person, giving true and concrete instructions in different aspects of the English’s life.
In this way, we can boldly assert that proverbs are really one of the indicators of national character of this folk, that’s why the English people are so punctual, pedantic and lead measured way of life.
