ANIMAL ASTRONAUT

Before Americans sent a human into space, they sent a chimpanzee named Ham. On January 31,1961, Ham blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The chimp was sent as the first American astronaut to make sure the trip would be safe for people. It wasn’t until Ham returned safely to Earth that space leaders dared to risk sending a human astronaut, Alan Shepherd. Now sending a person into space is quite common. But in 1961 it was unusual and very daring.

Ham, the first space chimp, stopped working in the space program in 1963. He spent most of the next twenty years living with humans.

He didn’t have any chimp friends at all. Then he went to live at a zoo in North Carolina where he met other chimpanzees. None of them had ever been in space, but they were like him to most other ways. Ham made special friends with Maggie, a lady chimpanzee.

Ham died suddenly in the spring of 1983. Maggie was with him when he died.
