Family, relations and friends”

Teaching objectives:

Practical: to develop four types of pupils’ language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing on the basis of the texts “ My family”, “Janet’s Mother” to teach pupils dialogue and monologue speech, to involve pupils in the process of communication.

Educational: to expand pupils’ knowledge of English as a foreign language.

Developing: to incorporate pupils’ creative thinking, teamwork.

Educative: pictures of parents, families, cards, an additional text “Janet’s Mother”, teaching material on the subject “Family”.

Procedure

I.Warming-up

1.T: Good morning, children. We are always happy to be together. We do many things together. So, let’s sing about it together. (Children sing a song together)

A song

Together, together,

Together every day.

Together, together,

We work and play.

T: Children, what is the song about?

P1: It is about friends.

T: Right you are, it is about good friends.

2. Phonetic and speech drills

T: Do you have a friend?

P2: Yes, I do.

T: Is he/she a good friend?

P2: Yes, he/she is a good friend.

T: Children, now look at the blackboard, please. Here is a proverb of a good friend.

The proverb: “A friend is need is a friend indeed.” Teacher reads it drawing the pupils’ attention to the sounds [e], [d], [i] and intonation.

T: Kirill, who is your true friend?

P3: Mikael is my true friend indeed.

II.Speaking

T: Children, and now let’s remember how to ask question about a friend. Let’s sing a song and ask a girl about her name, age, etc. (Pupils sing song)

That’s my name. I am a pupil (3 times)

That’s where I live.

T: What do you remember about this girl? What’s her name?

P4: Her name is Janet.

T: How old is she?

P5: She is eleven years old.

T: What does Janet do?

P6: Janet is a pupil.

T: Where does she live?

P7: She lives in London.

(Teacher asks a pupil to speak about Janet. A short story can be the following:

“The girl’s name is Janet. She is 11. Janet is a pupil. She lives in London.)

T: You see, I know that Janet is Olia’s penfriend. She knows what form Janet is in, what street she lives in, what relatives, Janet has and what their names and professions are. Let’s ask Olia’s about it.

P1: What form Janet is?

Olia: Janet is in the first form.

P2: What street does she live in?

Olia: Janet lives in Green Street.

P3: Is Janet’s family big?

Olia: No, it isn’t.

P4: What family does Janet have?

Olia: Janet has a mother, a father, and a brother.

P5: What is her father’s name?

Olia: His name is John.

P6: How old is she?

Olia: He is thirty-six.

P7: What does he do?

Olia: He is a businessman.

P8: What is her brother’s name?

Olia: His name is Tom.

P9: How old is he?

Olia: He is four.

P10: Is he a pupil?

Olia: No, he isn’t. Tom is a little boy.

T: Olia has got a letter from Janet. Janet writes about her mother. She writes a poem about her mom. Let’s read it together.

III. Reading and discussing the poem “My mummy”

(Teacher reads the poem)

My mummy.

Mother is the dearest

Of all the friends I know.

She helps me work and helps me play

That’s why I love her so.

T: Children, these are new words, let’s read them.

(The words are written in the cards.)

Dearest, to know, that’s why

(Pupils read the poem after teacher)

T: Is Janet’s mother the dearest friend of all the friends she knows?

P1: Yes, she is.

T: Does Janet love her mother?

P2: Yes, she does.

T: Why does she love her mother?

P3: She loves her very much because mother helps her work and play.

T: Do you know poems about mothers?

P4: I love my mother.

She’s kind, she’s gay,

She reads me books

And helps me play.

IV. The pupils’ stories about their mothers

(It was pupils’ homework to make up stories about their mothers using short poems they have learned.)

T: And now Janet about your mothers.

P1: I have a very nice mother. She’s a pretty woman. My mother loves me very much. And I love her too.

P2: My mother’s name is Nina. She’s thirty-one. She’s a teacher. She goes to work every day. My mother takes care of our family. She is always busy.

My mother is busy

From morning till night

Keeping her family

Happy and bright.

V. Listening

Olia who’s the best at English was given the task to make up a story about Janet’s mother. Pupils are given the new vocabulary. They read the words and expressions:

Hospital

As busy as a bee (very busy)

To be good to

To have a talk

To have a walk

To take care of

To have much work about the house

Pupils are also given the questions they are to answer after listening to the story about Janet’s mother:

  • What kind of woman is Janet’s mother?

  • What is her name?

  • How old is she?

  • Where does Janet’s mother work?

  • What does she do?

Olia shoes the picture of Janet’s mother. Then she reads the letter.

Dear Olia,

I have a very nice mummy. She’s very nice and kind. My mother’s name is Sarah. She’s young. She’s thirty-one. My mother works at a very big hospital. She’s a doctor. My mother is always is busy as a bee. She takes care of our family. She has much work about the house. She is very good to me. She loves me very much. I like to play, have a walk, have a talk with my mother.

Pupils answer the question to the text.





VI. Reading

Each pupil is given the text that was listened to – “Janet’s mother”. The pupils answer such questions:

  • Does Janet help her mother?

  • Is Janet’s mother as busy as a bee?

  • Why does Janet love her mother?
