Glastonbury was influenced by hippie ethics and the free festival movement in the early 1970s. Organizer Michael Eavis decided to host the first festival, then called Pilton Festival. Since 1981, the festival has been organized by him and his company Glastonbury Festivals Ltd. Eavis ran the festival with his wife Jean until her death in 1999, and is now assisted by his daughter Emily. Organizer

Most people who stay at Glastonbury Festival camp live in tents. There are many different camping areas: Limekilns and Hitching Hill Ground are quieter, Cockrill Meadow and Wicket Ground are family campsites, Spring Ground is a campsite for the disabled. Festival-goers must bring their own tents. Campervans and trailer tents are not allowed. Accommodation
