The fountains of Petrozavodsk.

About 20 fountains decorate the streets of the city.

The most popular fountain of Petrozavodsk is the fountain in Student's Avenue that was built by the architect E.Taev on 29 June, 1996.The fountain is situated at the place where a two-storeyd building burned once. The fountain consists of several jets and a huge ball. The appearance of it changed the image of the city. Every day a lot of people spend their free time there. The students call the fountain as "Vasiliev' slope" in honour of the rector of the State University V.Vasiliev.

The fountain in a small garden on the corner of Lenin Avenue and Engels Street was opened in 1961, the author of it is the sculptor V. Soini. There are lots of benches around the fountain where people can rest and have a good time.

The fountain in a small garden on the corner of Lenin Avenue and Kirov Street was reconstructed in 1982 by the sculptor Shukvani. But it was built more than 50 years ago.

The fountain in a small garden on the corner of Kirov and Sverdlov Streets was built on 30 June, 1995 by the architect N.Trishkov and the sculptor L.Lankinen. This fountain is dedicated to the 150s birthday of the epos "Kalevala". The runes of "Kalevala" can be seen through the water. The fountain has another name "Deputies' tears" because the fountain has 56 jets and there are 57 deputies in the Legislative Assembly.

The Karelian scientific centre stands on a rough relief, so it is supported by different stones. The building was built in 1971 by the architect E.Trishkov, also he created a fountain in the centre of a garden. This fountain has a lot of jets. As for the garden, uncommon decorative plants from Europe grow there.

At the end of 70s a new fountain was built in the centre of The Lososinka River. In 1962 the investigators of the North expidition made a hole in the earth and a huge jet rose up into the air.

There is also the fountain in Birch Avenue in Drevlyanka. It was constructed by the archicets L.Bejyaeva, N.Trishkov and others.

And one of the most beautiful fountains of Petrozavodsk is situated near the “Expocentre”. It was reconstructed on 28 June 1997 by N. Trishkov and Saltup. This fountain didn't work for about 20 years. Not only the Government but also other companies investigated money in the building of it. The fountain consists of two cranes.

There is also a fountain dedicated to the hero of the Civil War V.I.Chapaev. It was opened near one of the wooden houses in Chapaev Street in 2005. The authors of it – D.Varlamov, S.Vasiliev and A.Smelnitskyi think that there is special atmosphere near that house. Chapaev wrote in his diary that he had travelled a lot to the north and he had seen a small fountain ntar a wooden house. The investigators of Chapaev's life decided to make a hole in Chapaev Street. And they found the fountain. It is on the level of 87 metres above the lake. It is very interesting because Chapaev was born in 1887.
