IT IS or THERE IS

1. it is + прилагательное; there is + существительное:

It is foggy. - Туманно	There is a fog. – Туман.
It was very wet. - Было сыро	There was a lot of rain. – Дождливо.
It won't be very sunny. Не будет солнечно.	There won't be much sun. Будет мало солнца.

2. it is указывает на время. расстояние, человека и т.д.

there is говорит о наличии времени, расстояния, человека (и о связанной.с этим возможности)

It is a long way to Moscow.

До Москвы далеко

There is a long way still to go.

Далеко еще ехать.

It is time to go home.

Пора домой.

There is time for us to go home and return. Время позволяет сходить домой и (успеть) вернуться.

It is someone I know.

Я знаю этого человека.

There is someone at the door.

Кто-то пришел.

3. it is употребляется в конструкциях типа:

It was he who wrote about this young actor	Именно он написал об этом молодом актере
It is the Grandmother who always makes the decisions,	Только бабушка и принимает всегда все решения.
