Герундий — это безличная форма глагола, которая сочетает в себе признаки существительного и глагола. Он несет в себе значение некого процесса. Если сравнивать с русским языком, то герундий в некоторых моментах схож с отглагольными существительными с суффиксами -ние (плавание), -тие (чаепитие), -ка (стирка), -ство (баловство). Чаще всего герундий в русском переводе выступает существительным, глаголом или деепричастием.

Swimming is really good for your back.

I enjoy reading non-fiction books.

We ran 7 kilometers without stopping.

ПРАВИЛА НАПИСАНИЯ

Если инфинитив заканчивается на согласную букву, которой предшествует краткий гласный,то согласная буква удваивается:

To run-running

Если инфинитив заканчивается на немую букву – е,эта буква опускается:

to come - coming

В остальных случаях изменений основы не происходит:

КОГДА ИСПОЛЬЗУЕТСЯ ГЕРУНДИЙ 1. СУЩЕСТВУЮТ ГЛАГОЛЫ, ПОСЛЕ КОТОРЫХ УПОТРЕБЛЯЕТСЯ ТОЛЬКО ГЕРУНДИЙ. ИХ НЕМАЛО, ЧТОБЫ ЗАПОМНИТЬ ЭТИ ГЛАГОЛЫ БЫЛО ЛЕГЧЕ, МЫ ОБЪЕДИНИЛИ ИХ В НЕСКОЛЬКО СМЫСЛОВЫХ ГРУПП:

He was accused of robbing the shop. I am looking forward to visiting Rome. She was trying to prevent her brother from being arrested.

3. Герундий употребляют после конструкции to be + прилагательное + предлог:

to be afraid of smth — бояться чего-либо to be ashamed of smth — стыдиться чего-либо to be engaged in smth — быть занятым чем-либо to be fond of smth — любить что-либо, увлекаться чем-либо to be good/bad at smth — хорошо/плохо уметь что-либо, быть способным/неспособным к чему-либо to be interested in smth — интересоваться чем-либо

to be proud of smth — гордиться чем-либо to be responsible for smth — быть ответственным за что-либо to be sorry for smth — сожалеть о чем-либо to be tired of smth — уставать от чего-либо

4. Существуют глаголы, после которых можно использовать как герундий, так и инфинитив (глагол с частицей to). При этом никакой разницы в значении не будет.

to begin, to start — начинать to continue — продолжать to intend — намереваться to bother — стараться что-либо сделать to prefer — предпочитать

He continued talking / to talk. They started watching / to watch a film 30 minutes ago.

5. Некоторые глаголы могут употребляться и с инфинитивом, и с герундием, но при этом смысл предложения будет разный.
