St Valentine's Day .

St. Valentine’s Day  comes on the 14-th of February.

It is widely celebrated among people of all ages. Valentine’s Day is a time when people (men, women, children and friends) express  their  feelings  to those whom they love or  adore . Some people give greeting cards, flowers, chocolates, perfumes or  jewelry  to their admirers  or partners or take each other for a romantic dinner at a restaurant.

День Святого Валентина наступает 14 февраля. Он широко отмечается среди людей всех возрастов. День святого Валентина – это время, когда люди (мужчины, женщины, дети и друзья) выражают свои чувства тем, кого они любят или обожают. Некоторые люди дарят поздравительные открытки, цветы, шоколад, духи или украшения своим поклонникам или партнерам или берут друг друга на романтический ужин в ресторане.    

The legend tells us a story of an Italian monk Valentine who helped young people to marry breaking the ruler's law. St Valentine was executed but people still remember him and celebrate this saint's day as a day of love.   The best presents are small trifles, chocolates and greeting cards.

Another legend tells us than St. Valentine, the best children’s friend, was jailed, cause he didn’t want to worship the Roman Gods. The children brought him messages to prison, where they wrote that they loved him and miss him very much.

On the 14-th of February, 270 (two hundred 70) St. Valentine was executed.

• In Wales wooden love spoons decorated with hearts were given as gifts on the 14-th of February .
• If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside , you will also know how many children you will have .
• If a young woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine’s Day , it meant she would marry a sailor .

• В некоторых странах молодая женщина может получить в подарок одежду от молодого человека. Если она сохранит подарок, значит, выйдет за него замуж. Если женщина видела золотую рыбку, она выйдет замуж за миллионера. В Уэльсе деревянные ложки, символизирующие любовь, украшенные сердечками, дарят на 14 февраля. Если вы разрежете яблоко пополам и посчитаете, сколько семян внутри, вы также будете знать, сколько у вас будет детей. Если молодая женщина видела малиновку, летящую над головой в День святого Валентина, это означало, что она выйдет замуж за моряка.

• In Germany the girls planted onions with the names of young men . She put the onions in a corner near the fireplace. She thought she would marry the man whose onion sprouted first.

In England the amount of roses has different meaning. 1 rose means Love. 12 roses mean gratitude. 25 roses mean congratulations. 50 roses mean true love.

A French princess, Madam Royal, named her palace ”The Valentine ”. She had valentine parties in the early 1600’s.

Cupid

Cupid is the most famous Valentine symbol, a winged child with arrows meaning love . Cupid aims those arrows at Gods and humans , causing them to fall in love . To the Romans he was Cupid , and his mother was Venus .
