Decisions you need to make when planning online lessons What’s the same You need to have a meaningful learning objective, and material and activities that are logically ordered to enable learners to achieve that objective; you need to decide how to monitor learning and deal with feedback etc. Different tools You have different tools available to you online (e.g. chat box, breakout rooms, interactive whiteboard), so you need to make sure that the materials and activities you select can work with these tools. Ensuring interactivity Online, you’re more likely to ask learners to share their answers via the chat box so you can assess all learners’ reading skills, and then nominate a learner to explain their answer before you confirm it. 11/27/2024

Decisions you need to make when planning online lessons Synchronous vs asynchronous Another important consideration is how much learning on your course takes place in live lessons with learners all working together at the same time (synchronous learning) and how much can take place outside of these lessons with learners working on material at their own pace in their own time (asynchronous learning). Achieving learner objectives in different ways The same learning objectives can be achieved whether activities are done synchronously or asynchronously. You might decide, for example, to spend time in live lessons on oral language practice, while gap-fill-type language practice tasks are completed asynchronously as consolidation and vice versa. 11/27/2024

Decisions you need to make when planning online lessons Flipped learning Finally, you may choose to provide instruction asynchronously, with learners watching short videos of input (e.g. language presentation and clarification or explanation of a learning strategy) and then synchronous time spent on practice. This is known as ‘flipped learning’. 11/27/2024

Displaying and sharing reading materials -When you’re planning, another really important thing is how you’re going to show materials to people. You can ask yourself next questions: -Do you have a white board setup? -Do you have something that you want them to read? -Do you have like an exercise and how are you going to show it to them? So is it a PowerPoint slide? -But if you show it as a whole, it doesn’t really fit on your screen. So you’ve got to consider how you might split that text up or whether you’re going to scroll through it on the screen as you’re talking. -Having a hand out with the full text or the full information is a really useful resource because then they can see how it fits into the plan. They can see and they can refer to other things at the same time. 11/27/2024

Are these statements true or false, according to what you`ve heard? The structure of a reading lesson is different in an online lesson. Whether learners do the reading task in the lesson or for homework depends only on their age. Young learners are more likely to read texts in the lesson. Adult learners are more likely to read texts in the lesson. If the lesson focus is reading for specific information, the learners can do the reading in class. If the lesson focus is reading for detailed information, the learners can do the reading for homework. When learners read a text for homework, the next lesson can focus on checking the learners’ understanding and follow-up work. 11/27/2024

Developing listening skills online

Listening activities for online lessons Jigsaw listening – for homework, half the class watch one talk and the other half watch a different talk but on the same topic. In the next lesson, learners work in pairs in breakout rooms and compare the speakers’ views and justifications. A song – young learners watch a video of people performing a song. The teacher helps the learners to learn the words using pictures and mime, and they all sing along. A dictogloss – in class, the teacher reads out a short text giving factual information. The learners listen and take notes about what they heard. These two steps are repeated. The learners are then paired in breakout rooms. They use their notes to reconstruct the text, typing it onto a shared document. 11/27/2024

Listening activities for online lessons 4.A film clip – in class, learners watch a short clip from a film with no sound. They predict what they think the people were saying and type their ideas into the chat box. They then watch with the sound on to check. 5.Questions – in class, the teacher reads out a set of questions. Each time, the learner has to count the number of words they hear. The teacher asks the questions again and the learner answers them. 6.Which photo? – in class, the teacher displays six photos using the share screen option. The teacher then reads out a sentence to describe one of the photos, saying where something is, e.g. The cat’s sitting on the table. The learners say which photo the teacher is describing. 11/27/2024

Assessing learning in online lessons -There is a greater focus on formative assessment in online learning than summative assessment i.e. assessment through monitoring -Formative assessment involves the teacher listening carefully to learners, gathering answers from all learners where possible, monitoring breakout rooms, looking at quiz responses and out of class tasks, and setting short progress tests or quizzes that can be completed via the chat box, or a quiz tool like Kahoot. -We might want to set listening and reading tasks for out of class practice and ask learners to complete it as a summative test. In which case, we can use a tool such as Mentimeter to gather their answers again. -There are paid-for tools which lock a learners’ device so that they’re unable to look at anything else except the screen where the recording will play and they need to submit their answers.  11/27/2024
