When the question is a part of a bigger sentence, it loses the normal question word order

Compare:

Where has Tom gone ?

Do you know where Tom has gone ?

Remember!

• When you begin question with

Do you know…

Can you tell me … (Tell me … )

Could you tell me …

Have you any idea …

the question has the direct word order !

Why are you laughing?

Tell us why you are laughing?

Don’t forget:

• When there is no other question word use conjunctions:

If / whether

Did he see you?

Do you know if he saw you?

Has she come?

Could you tell me whether she has come?

• Make questions polite and give answers to them:
