Isa Konoevich Ahunbaev was born on 25 th September, 1908 in Toru-Aigyr village near Issyk-Kul lake. In 1916, his family moved to China where Isa Konoevich spent all his childhood. When he was 15, he returned back to Kyrgyzstan and started going to the village school. Every day, in any kind of weather he had to walk 20 kilometers to school and back home.
In 1925, Isa Konoevich went to Frunze( now Bishkek) and then to Tashkent to continue his education. In Tashkent, he became a student of the Department of Medicine in the University of Central Asia. When he was a student, he tried not to waste even a minute of his time and read a lot of books. Very soon he became the best student in the university.
In 1935, he returned to Kyrgyzstan. In 1936, Isa Konoevich started working as a resident doctor in a hospital. In 1946, he defended his thesis “ Appendicitis in the Young Age” and two years later he defended his first doctoral thesis on “ Endemic Goiter in Chui Valley”. The same year he became the Rector of the Kyrgyz State Medical University, the first person in the history of Kyrgyzstan who became an Associate Member of the Academy of Science in the Soviet Union and the member of the International Association of Surgeons. In 1959, he became the first surgeon in Central Asia who performed a heart operation. He wrote more than 300 scientific works and created 3 dictionaries.
In January 1975, he died in a car accident together with his wife, daughter and his son-in-law. In 2008, the President of our country named the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy after I. K. Ahunbaev. One street in Bishkek is also named I.K.Ahunbaev
