Pancakes Day

There are a lot of unusual and ancient traditions in Great Britain. One of them is Pancakes Day which is similar to Russian Shrovetide. The British call it “ Fat Tuesday ”

Pancake day is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday in spring at the beginning of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter. Pancake day is traditionally a day of celebration, the last day that you can eat what you want until Easter. It has been celebrated in Britain for centuries.

Olney is a hometown of Pancake Race

Olney is a small town in Buckinghamshire which is famous for its “tasty” festival. The most interesting event during this festival is ‘ Pancake Races ”.

The history of these races goes back to the 15th century. In 1445, a housewife who was baking pancakes heard the church bells, she was late to the church service so she ran with a frying pan and a pancake. It has become a tradition of the English since this day.

Nowadays Pancake race is the most favorite custom of children and grownups

English schoolchildren’s tradition

This funny tradition takes place in Westminster school in London.

The school cook throws a big pancake and boys try to catch the biggest piece of the pancake.

The winner gets a prize.

Holiday cookbook

  The English eat pancakes only with sugar and lemon juice.
