Opinion essays

An opinion essay presents our personal opinion on a particular topic. An opinion essay should contain:

An introduction

A main body

A conclusion

An Introduction

• Used to introduce the subject and state our opinion clearly.

A main body

• Consists of two or more paragraphs (each presenting a separate viewpoint supported by reasons/examples) and including a paragraph giving the opposing viewpoint

A CONCLUSION

• Used to state our opinion using different words.

Deciding on your opinion

• Before you write an opinion essay, decide how you feel about issue. Do you strongly/partly agree/disagree? Do you accept both sides of the argument? This will affect the way you structure your essay.
