  1. In 1783 the colonies in America won the War of Independence.

  2. In 1787 the representatives made a government and wrote the Constitution.

  3. The US government has 3 branches: the Congress, the President and his helpers, and the Supreme Court.

  4. The Congress makes laws which people must obey.

  5. It can declare war on other countries.

  6. It’s divided into the Senate and the House of Representatives.

  7. Each state sends 2 representatives to the Senate and it has 1 hundred senators.

  8. All in all, the House of Representatives has 435 congressmen and congresswomen.

  9. The number of them from each state depends on its population.

  10. The US President is Commander in Chief of the country’s armed forces.

  11. He signs bills and they become laws.

  12. The Vice-president and the Cabinet help him to make decisions.

  13. The Americans vote for the President in November of every leap year.

  14. The Supreme Court is made of nine judges.

  15. They make sure that the President follows the Constitution.

  16. There are 27 amendments to the US constitution.

  17. The 1st ten ones are the Bill of Rights and it guaranties very important rights such as freedom of press or religion.

  18. After the Civil War there were 3 important amendments.

  19. They ended slavery, made all black people citizens of the US and gave them the right to vote.

  20. Now all people older than 18 have the right to vote.
