Good morning, everybody. Glad to see you again.

Take your seats, please.

How are you today? And what about you?

Ok, thank you. So let’s start our English lesson.

By the way, what date is it today? Please, open your copybooks and write down the date.

First of all, let’s check up your home exercise № 116.   Tell me, please, what you had to do in it.

Right you are, so look at the screen. You may check your answers. Let’s explain some examples of articles under №1,2,3

Ok, thank you let’s go on.

Today we‘ll continue to speak about human impact on the Earth and our responsibilities for the environment.. We’ll discuss the ecological problems. So, write down the topic « Human impact on the Earth »your copybooks

Now, find ex N 117.

Discuss   the following questions with your partner. (The expressions on the screen will help you)

What are the biggest threats to the environment today?

Is anything being done about them?

I think all of you are right. Do these problems worry you? Why?/Why not?

Answer the second question, please

All right, thank you for your answers.

Today we’ll learn about the Kyoto Protocol. Have you ever heard about this document?

But before it, let’s revise some phrases. Look at the screen, please. Copy the words into the copybooks. Have you finished? Let’s try to understand the words.

  • an addition to - something that you add to something else

  • to engage in smth.  - to take part in a particular activity

  • came into smth. - to be an aspect of a situation

  • to deal with -  to take action to do something, especially to solve a problem

  • to contribute to - to help something to progress.

Is it clear for you? All right. Now repeat the words all together.

It’s time to fill in the prepositions to complete the expressions. Translate the expressions into Russian.

  1. An addition … Convention

  2. To engage… trading

  3. The agreement came … force

  4. To deal … climate change

  5. To contribute … socio-economic growth

  6. Changes are required … many reasons

Well done, thank you.

Let’s enrich your vocabulary and make nouns from the following verbs. Write them down, please.

Now we are ready to read the text and say what the main target of the Kyoto Protocol is.

The Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol is an addition to   the United Nations Convention on Climate Change.

Countries that ratify this protocol commit to reducing of their emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases.  Industrialized countries have specified reductions targets and can engage in emissions trading or what’s being called “joint implementations”. Finally, countries  can take part in third instrument, the “Clean development mechanism”.

A total of 141 countries have ratified the Kyoto agreement. Notable exceptions include the USA and

Australia. The agreement came into force on February 16, 2005, following ratification by Russia.

The Kyoto Protocol may seem just a small first step to dealing with climate change, but it is significant. We have to find ways to contribute to socio-economic growth and at the same time lower our emissions of greenhouse gases.

But the major changes of our energy systems that are required, are not only to reduce their harmful effects, but also to address  the oil shortage, the security of our energy supply, and even world peace.

– Class, you’ve read the text. So, what is the main purpose of the …?

T – You are quite right. I see you‘ve understood the main idea of the text correctly. And now, let’s discuss this document. Is it an important document? Why?

What countries didn’t ratify it? Why? How many did countries ratify the Kyoto Protocol?

All right, thank you for your answers.

Now, listen to some teenagers talking about an idea aim at helping the environment.

Some new words will help you to understand the teenagers better. Look at the screen, please.

amount of

junk mail

available

So listen and answer:what is the idea? Ex 121

Speaker 1

Yes, I think, it’s a great idea! Right now we all pay  the same amount of money but some of us produce five times as much as others. At my home we are doing our best to reduce the amount of rubbish we produce. We’ve actually cut it down to one bin bag a month. Other people still throw out as much as six or seven bags a week. I don’t think I should pay for other people’s rubbish.

Speaker 2

I believe it’s not our fault. The amount of packaging in supermarkets is terrible and they often don’t give us a choice. Why on Earth are cucumbers  wrapped in plastic? I believe supermarkets must be more responsible  and they should actually be fined for using so much packaging. Why should we pay for their responsibilities to the environment?

Speaker 3

I would really like to recycle but at the moment it’s not organized well in our community. We don’t have any recycling bins around, and I actually don’t know whether they are even available at all in my town. I believe my local government should do something about it.

Speaker 4

Yes, I think it’s brilliant idea to pay for the amount of rubbish we throw out. But what can I do with the all the junk mail and fliers in my mailbox every morning. Where should I put it all? And then how am I supposed to organized that all?

T – Listen to the text once again and make notes if the students support the idea aimed at helping the environment or don’t support it.

T - Is your situation similar to the speakers’ or is it different?

And now it’s time to sum up. What have you learnt at the lesson?

Thank you for your work.

Your marks are:

Write down your home exercise. It is exercise 120, page 40. you should do it at home in writing. Please, learn new expressions with prepositions from this exercise by heart.
