Lesson 2.

Aims of the lesson:

  • easily confused words relating to money

  • collocations with go, do and make relating to shopping and money

To give students the opportunity to express their attitude to money and shopping

Teacher: Good morning! Glad to see you.

We have started Unit 5 recently and today we are going to speak about money and shopping. Today you’ll learn if you are sensible shoppers or not. You’ll also learn what different people do with money. And of course there will be something new, I mean easily confused words. So let’s start.

I’d like you to look at the screen and answer the questions.

(- What interesting facts about money have you learned from exercise B p 60?

- What kinds of shops can you see?

- Where do you prefer buying things? Why?)

Please ask N (Pupils ask N, he/she answers)

Good job! And now get prepared to give a two-minute talk on shopping. That was your homework. Have you got any questions? Don’t forget about some introduction and conclusion.

M, what can you tell us about shopping? (Pupil M presents his/her 2-minute talk. Teacher makes comments)

It’s time now to do new exercises and learn whether you are sensible shoppers or spenders. Please open your books and have a look at ex A p 62. Please do the quiz. ( 1-2 minutes). Characterise yourselves with the help of p164.

2-3 pupils speak about shopping and money.

So we can see that different people have various attitude to shopping and money. The verse Money proves the same thing. Look at the screen! Let’s read it!

(Pupils read the verse in turn)

Workers earn it.

Spendthrifts burn it.

Bankers lend it.

Women spend it.

Forgers fake it.

Taxes take it.

Dying leave it.

Heirs receive it.

Thrifty save it.

Misers crave it.

Robbers seize it.

Rich increase it.

Gamblers lose it.

I could use it.

Are there any new words? What do you think they mean?

(Students answer)

Please work in pairs, ask each other questions beginning with Who.

(2 students ask each other questions. Teacher’s comments)

Now I’d like you to present the result of a group work. Your task is to explain the meaning of the three easily confused words : borrow, lend, owe. The second group, your task is to explain how to use the verbs go, do, make.

(2-3 minutes. Pupils’ answers. Teacher’s comments)

So our lesson comes to the end. What have you learned today? Where can you use this knowledge?

Now please write down your new homework.

P62 – learning the words, ex BD p 62 in writing.

Thank you for the work. Good bye!
