Presenter: Good afternoon, dear friends! (SLIDE 1). Each nation has its heroes.

Today we’ll talk about outstanding American and Canadian people who are the famous also in the world and whose achievements are the great contribution in the developing of their countries.

If you are asked to organize a Hall of Fame of America and Canada whose portraits would you include in the gallery?

Who made many achievements for the developing of different spheres: music, art, literature, culture, science, sport, space exploration?

Let’s divide into two teams. You have to take one card and form two teams which will be called «America» and «Canada».

Frank Frazetta

Frank Frazetta — the American artist of fantasy, the illustrator, the cartoonist, the author of comics. One of the most influential artists of a genre. Frazetta was born on the 9th of February 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, the USA. He graduated from the Brooklyn Academy of Arts. Since sixteen years Frank began to draw comics professionally, his first works were in a western style. After that Frazetta drew comics about superheroes cooperated with Walt Disney. Since 1964 Frazetta created the covers for the books, the most known of which were books about Conan and Tarzan. Also Frazetta was the movie cartoonist.

Now Frazetta is considered a classic of fantasy illustration. His pictures are highly appreciated, in 2009 one of them was sold on the auction for 1 million dollars.

He died on the 10th of May, 2010.

Фрэнк Фразетта — американский художник-фантаст, иллюстратор, мультипликатор, автор комиксов. Один из самых влиятельных художников жанра.

Фразетта родился 9 февраля 1928 года в Бруклине, Нью-Йорк, США. Он окончил Бруклинскую Академию Искусств. С шестнадцати лет Фрэнк начал профессионально рисовать комиксы, первые его работы были в стиле вестерн. Позднее Фразетта переключился на комиксы о супергероях. сотрудничал с Walt Disney. С 1964 Фразетта занялся созданием обложек для книг, наиболее известные из которых — книги о Конане и Тарзане. Также Фразетта выступил в качестве художника-мультипликатора.

Сейчас Фразетта считается классиком фантастической иллюстрации. Его картины высоко ценятся, в 2009 году одна из них ушла с аукциона по цене 1 млн долларов. Умер 10 мая 2010 года.

Paul Kane

The Canadian artist of the Irish origin. He is known for the pictures of the native people in the west of Canada and other native Americans in the State of Oregon.

Kane was born in Ireland on the 3rd of September 1810, in the city of Mallow. He was the fifth child of eight children. In Canada the boy went to the college where since 1830 he took painting lessons. But practically he was a self-taught artist. Kane began his career as an artist of signs and murals of furniture accessories. On the first portraits the artist represented the well-known citizens of town, including the sheriff, the owner of the factory where he worked and his wife. He died on the 20th of February, 1871.

Presenter: The rules of this round are the following: I read you some texts about Canadian and American musicians and singers but I don't mention the name of the person. You listen to me very attentively and try to guess this person. If you are ready to answer you can cry: "Stop!" and name the person. If the answer is right you'll win 2 points. If the answer is wrong I continue my reading. The other team has the right to answer. The team that will guess more persons wins. Are the rules of the round clear? Let's begin then.

1) Date of birth is on the 27th of September, 1984. The birthplace is Bellvillie, Canada.

2) The popularity came in 2000

3) On January 2011 this singer is one of the most popular singers in the USA with 11,5 million sold albums

Mark Twain

Mark Twain, a real name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on the 30th of November, 1835 in settlement Florida (State Missouri) — the American writer, the journalist and the public figure. His works span many genres - realism, romanticism, humor, satire, philosophical fiction, journalism, etc., and all these genres, he has consistently taken the position of a humanist and democrat. Twain was a great orator. Mark Twain spent a lot of time to search for young literary talents and helped them break through, using his influence and his publishing company. Twain was fond of science and scientific problems. He died on the 21^st of April, 1910.

Марк Твен, настоящее имя Сэ́мюэл Лэ́нгхорн Кле́менс родился 30 ноября 1835 в посёлке Флорида (штат Миссури) — американский писатель, журналист и общественный деятель. Его творчество охватывает множество жанров - реализм, романтизм, юмор, сатира, философская фантастика, публицистика и др., и во всех этих жанрах он неизменно занимает позицию гуманиста и демократа. Твен был прекрасным оратором. Марк Твен много времени уделял поиску молодых литературных талантов и помогал им пробиться, используя своё влияние и приобретённую им издательскую компанию. Твен увлекался наукой и научными проблемами. Умер 21 апреля 1910.

Charles Roberts

Charles Roberts (1860-1943) ─ outstanding Canadian writer and naturalist, received the world fame for his tales about the life of nature. A native of Eastern Canada, Charles Roberts passionately loved and knew his territory. Animals and birds of the Deaf Canadian forests became the heroes of his works. They grow, hunt, protect themselves from enemies, escape from the winter cold. Animal’s Life in the books of Roberts is closely intertwined with the life of nature in general.

Чарлз Робертс (1860-1943) ─ выдающийся канадский писатель и натуралист получил мировое признание благодаря своим рассказам из жизни природы. Уроженец Восточной Канады, Чарлз Робертс страстно любил и хорошо знал свой край. Звери и птицы глухих канадских лесов стали героями его произведений. Они растут, охотятся, защищаются от врагов, спасаются от зимней стужи. Жизнь животных в книгах Робертса тесно переплетается с жизнью природы в целом.

(3 points) If you call the story and the characters, you’ll get 2 additional points. You can get 5 points in this round. I give you one minute.

Presenter: You have to guess the person on the screen. If you’ll guess it at once, you’ll get 3 points. If not, you will attempt to do it 2 times with the help of the sentences on the screen. But in this case, you’ll get less points. This is the famous American comedy actor.

8. This actor became the world famous after the role of Neo in the film "The Matrix". (Keanu Reeves)

9. Who was the director of the films “Terminator”, “ Titanic”, “ Avatar”? (James Cameron)

10. Canadian ice hockey player and former ice hockey coach. he has been called as the best player in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). (Wayne Gretzky)
