get back to school? How do you feel when you come back to school on the 1st of
September?
Getting Back
Coming back to school again -
All our crowd together -
What a lot of ways we’ve been
In many kinds of weather!
After all our journeyings,
We see familiar faces.
And show each other all the things
We’ve brought from different places.

Are you going to swim / take sunglasses?
Alternately, students work in groups to plan a weekend trip. A reporter summarises
the discussion.
IV. Checking the homework. Discussion
Is it a good idea to go on holiday with your friend?
V. Reading (For advanced students)
1. New words:
Huge - огромный.
Sunstroke – солнечный удар.
Heat rash – высыпание от жары.
Sulk – быть сердитым.
Don’t go on holiday with your best friend!
It may seem like a good idea but too often it ends not very well.
She was selfish all the time!
It was August and I went with a friend to one of the quietest island in the
Aegean Sea for two weeks. It was a sun, sea and sand holiday and we were staying
in a small apartment. From the first day I realised I had made a huge mistake! It
was a very hot summer, which suited Catherine fine. She’s dark skinned, so she’d
cover herself in oil then just lie in the sun all day. If I did that, I’d be in hospital
suffering from sunstroke.
As it was, after three days I got really bad heat rash. I was hot and uncomfortable.
So, I’d sit all day in one of the local cafes reading. In the evening, when
Catherine and I went out for a meal, I would sulk because I felt Catherine was being
selfish and wasn’t considering what I wanted to do on the holidays. Catherine
and I are still friends but I should never have gone on a holiday with her, and I
certainly won’t again.
2. Post-reading activities.
1) Read and think.
• Who do you identify with, Catherine or your friend?
• Would you be upset if you were in Catherine’s position?
• Do you think Catherine was selfish?
2) Speaking.
Who do you think makes the best holiday companion and why?
VI. Relaxation
Comment on the joke.
A woman traveling by train was talking with the man in the next seat. In describing
her holiday she said she had visited San Jose.
“You pronounce that wrong”, said the man. “It is San Hosay. In California
you should pronounce all J’s as H’s. When were you there?”
The woman thought a minute, then answered “In Hune and Huly”.
VII. Writing
Read Clara’s letter and fill in the gaps with a preposition.
On / with / of / in / of / for / on.
1st August
Dear Donna, I love being on holiday here in Italy! I’m very found of swimming and sunbathing,
and the beaches here are perfect. I’m also keen on surfing, which they do
here. I’d like to try windsurfing too, but I’m a bit frightened of it.
And as you know, I’m interested in monuments and Italy is famous for its history.
I don’t think I could ever get bored with this place. I’d like to stay here forever.
Love, Clara
VIII. Extra Time
Robinson Crusoe’s island holiday lasted longer than he expected. Complete
the story with these prepositions.
Up / back / across / under / into / into / from / at / along / to.
Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe was a sailor from Britain whose ship sank. He swam to the
coast of a small deserted island. The first night he was frightened, so he climbed up
to the top of a tree to sleep. In the next few days he rescued some important things
from the ship, which was near the coast.
After that he put up his tent under a big tree. Then he explored the island. He
walked along the coast and also went into the jungle. Next he went across the island
to the other side. While he was on the island he did lots of things. He built a house,
collected fruit and hunted wild goats. He also made a canoe, but he couldn’t get it
into the water. In the end a ship stopped at the island and took him back to Britain.
IX. Homework
Write a letter to your friend about your summer holidays.
