Every season consists of three months and every month is noted for different holidays, special occasions and anniversaries of different events. We’ve come together today to talk only about one month. Do you want to know what its name is? Guess. Here is a calendar for this month and a puzzle for you. The name of this month has five letters. You can see five things in these pictures. The first letters of their names are for the letters of this month. What are they? (слайд с картинками)

Yes, we are going to talk about the fourth month of the year, the second month of spring – April. You will take part in different contests. For each correct answer the pupils of the first team will get snowdrops, the pupils of the second team – violets. Whichever team gets more flowers than the other one it will win.

The first task is called “The best reader. The best interpreter”

We don’t know exactly where the word April comes from. Perhaps it comes from the Latin word aperire, which means to open. There are some superstitions about April.

1. April is a month of heavy spring rains, the month of new leaves, and first spring flowers, for example, pretty violets and snowdrops.

2. It was noticed that if there is wind, frost or mist on the 7^th of April – it will be a year of good harvest.

3. If the day is rainy on the 7^th of April, the summer will bring a lot of mushrooms.

4. If the night on the eve of April is warm, spring will come quickly.

5. On the 25^th of April, you couldn’t go into the forest because the hungry bear had woken up after a long winter.

6. The 29^th of April is time to prepare seeds for planting.

Апрель – самый приятный / the most pleasant месяц в Англии. Один из символов месяца – ливни. Английский поэт Роберт Браунинг очень любил ливни, часто писал стихи о них. Вот одно из стихотворений в переводе Маршака

April is a month when some famous people were born. So next part of our holiday is “ It’s interesting to know that…”

It’s interesting to know that Daniel Defoe, the king of English prose, was born on April 13, 1660. He wrote his famous novel Robinson Crusoe at the age of 60. It became popular at once and nowadays this book is one of the most favourite books of children all over the world. (слайд с фотографией )

It’s interesting to know that Joseph Turner, one of the greatest British painters, was born on April 23, 1775. He’s known for his pictures of the sea and the sky. The light and the colour of his pictures show the force of the wind and the sea. (слайд с картинами )

It’s interesting to know that Charlotte Bronte, a brilliant British novelist, was born on April 25, 1816. Her best novel is Jane Eyre. She describes the horrors of the charity school where she spent some years of her unhappy childhood in this novel. (слайд)

William Shakespeare was born on the 23^rd of April 1564. (слайд) On this day people make a long procession to the Church. In the evening there is a performance in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Shakespeare wrote many sonnets (154). They are very popular and loved by people. All of them were translated into different languages. Listen to some of them. Next contest is called “Naughty Date / Озорная дата”. The first day of April is devoted to one of the most widely celebrated days of the year – April Fools’ Day. (слайд с датой и стихотворением)

Апрельская погода очень изменчива, это подтверждают народные наблюдения и поговорки: русская – « Не ломай печи, еще апрель на дворе», итальянская- «Апрель то плачет, то смеется», французская – «Если у тебя есть плохонькое полено, побереги его на апрель». Неустойчивая апрельская погода вселяла тревогу в земледельца, так как от нее зависели урожаи.

Наверное, поэтому и появилось поверье, что первый день апреля – несчастный. Желание отделаться от угрозы и привело к обычаю отмечать наступление апреля шутливыми обманами.

Предлагаем вам шутливое задание. Каждая команда получает карточки с английскими пословицами. Задача – найти соответствие в русском языке, изобразить предложенную пословицу.

Another holiday celebrated widely in many countries is Easter. Easter comes in spring at a different time each year (March or April). It is one of the greatest Christian festivals. In England, it’s time for giving and receiving gifts. Traditionally they take the form of an Easter egg. Nowadays, Easter eggs are usually made of chocolate. The Easter egg is the most popular emblem of Easter. It means nature’s awakening.

(слайд) In Russia people meeting each other say “Christ has risen!”. Kulich and paskha are traditional dishes of this day in Russia. People go to each other’s houses and exchange gifts, including painted eggs.

It was the last page of our calendar and I want to finish our talk about one of the finest spring’s month in England by the final contest. Each team is given a set of eight Easter eggs. On the back side of each of the eggs you can see one letter. Your task is to make up a word using these letters.

Now count your violets and snowdrops. The team with more flowers has won and its members are awarded with certificates naming them true experts of April dates.
