Man on the Moon

1

On July 16th, 1969, three astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins were travelling through space in a spacecraft called Apollo 11. They were going to the moon.

2

Five hundred people were watching them on television as they got closer to the moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin entered the lunar module, Eagle, and carefully chose a place to land. It was not easy to find a good place, but at 4:17 pm on July 20th, Armstrong announced: "The Eagle has landed."

3

It took the two astronauts three hours to put on their space suits and backpacks. By the time they were ready to leave the

Eagle and explore the moon, it was almost eleven o'clock. As Armstrong was climbing out of the lunar module, he lowered a television camera. People all over the world watched him step on the surface of the moon for the first time and heard him say the words, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

4

Aldrin followed Armstrong out of the lunar module and soon the two men were exploring the surface of the moon. The soil was very different to that on Earth. While the men were walking on the dusty surface, they noticed that their heavy boots left only shallow footprints. They were moving around using a walk that Armstrong called 'the kangaroo hop', because it was difficult to walk on the moon. They did several tests and even had a phone call from the President of America.

5

Two and a half hours later, the two astronauts went back to the Eagle. Their time on the moon was over, but they left behind

cameras, tools, backpacks, and a special plaque which said, "Here, men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July, 1969 AD. We came in peace for all mankind."
