Computer Viruses

Developments in technology seem to be announced at an ever-increasing 1) ……., and nowhere is this truer than in the field of electronics. New, more powerful and sophisticated computer systems seem to be produced so quickly that they appear out-of-date even before they are plugged in for the first time.

Unfortunately, while such systems are designed to make our lives easier and speed up our 2) ……. to information from other computers, they still leave users open to the risk of a computer virus attack.

In the past, computer viruses spread relatively slowly, but today, thanks to the development of the Internet and the 5) ……. of email, it is possible for a virus to spread rapidly and infect computers all around the world.

It is also advisable to back up important files on a 7) ……. basis to avoid losing valuable data in the case of a serious virus attack.

You are going to listen to the text “Virtual Shop”. Listen carefully and then put the words into space places. One is extra.

Virtual Shop

My shopping basket may be full, but it’s as light as a feather. There are amazing discounts, but there are no crowds. I can pay in a few seconds because there is no queue and, best of all, my wallet never leaves my back pocket. It seems like the dream shop, but this is the reality of online shopping and according to the latest survey, the majority of British web users have either tried it or intend to try it soon. This enthusiasm for this kind of shopping is partly cultural. For many years, the British used mail-order catalogues, 1) ……. . The catalogue would arrive on your doorstep and from the comfort of your armchair you could leisurely flip through the pages to choose whatever caught your eye. You ordered by phone or by letter and, within a few working days, you would get your clothes. And it all came with a money-back guarantee: if you weren’t pleased, you could send everything back. This simple idea has been adapted for the 21st century. The catalogue is now a screen and the phone call or letter is an email. Everything you need to know about an item is on your screen, 2) ……. . Customers can shop at midnight from their PCs or they can browse on their laptops on the way to work. The busy mother can even do her grocery shopping from her own kitchen after the children are tucked up in bed. Internet shopping first became popular in the early 1990s. In those days, customers were cautious about giving out their bank details over the Internet, 3) ……. . Online shopping was a habit that needed to develop and, slowly but surely, shoppers started buying CDs, books, and later DVDs. Nowadays, you can find almost everything for sale on the Internet and recently one man even put his house, job and friends up for auction!

One area that has seen a 40% increase over the last two years is that of fashion. More and more designer clothes and luxury accessories are being featured on websites at prices significantly lower than on the high street. Online shopping is not only quicker and easier, 4) ……. . There is also the chance to buy second-hand designer clothes, something that you would rarely see in any conventional shop. The trend in online shopping seems set to continue as improvements make accessing the Internet faster and cheaper. Shoppers no longer have to put up with a long wait for the site to download and the cost of connection is falling. The major chain stores are also getting in on the act with their own websites, 5) ……. . According to experts, Internet shopping is the future. There are still some obstacles to overcome, however. As with any new technology, there are always hidden problems, both technical and social. Credit card fraud is still the major concern of most web users, 6) ……. . In addition, personal information is often sold to businesses which then send huge amounts of unwanted advertisements, and consumer groups have expressed their worries about people getting into debt. Any drawbacks have not stopped retailers welcoming the Internet with open arms, though. For them, it is a way to increase profits and get rid of old-fashioned things like buildings and staff. Who needs a shop when you can have a warehouse and who needs salesmen when you have a website? The great debate over the future of Internet shopping continues. In the long run, the success of this method of shopping may come down to a simple factor: do people want to go out shopping or do they prefer to stay in surfing.

A but can also be done when and where the customer chooses

B which they ordered items such as clothes from

C because they fear their details will be used to clear out their bank accounts

D because getting addicted to online shopping is a cause for concern

E which will include its size, price, colour and availability

F so it took time for them to trust this new method of purchasing

G which are now offering an at-home alternative to their high street branches

You are going to listen to the text “My last summer holidays”. Listen carefully and then put the words into space places. One is extra.

My last summer holidays

I always look forward to my summer holidays. In my opinion, there's nothing like the Russian countryside. We've got a small country house in a very picturesque place not far from Zagorsk. There's a river and a lake there. My friends and I often go swimming and boating there. I'm also fond of lying in the sun. There's a lot of fish in the lake, so I sometimes go fishing. I like to sit in silence for a while waiting for a fish to get caught and listening to the birds singing in the trees. When I happen to catch a fish I set it free at once, because I do fishing just for pleasure.
When it's very hot I usually go to the forest. The air is cool there. I like to walk in the shade of the trees and pick mushrooms and berries. I've got a 1.….. called Jack. He becomes so happy when I take him with me to the forest.

Jack likes to run after butterflies or dragonflies. I sometimes play with him. I throw a stick and he brings it back to me.

But last summer my parents decided to go to some other place for a change. They made up their minds to go to the 2.……. I think it was the greatest mistake they had ever made. This, in a nutshell, is what happened. To begin with, it was very difficult to find a place to stay. We rented a room in a house a long way from the sea. It was the only place we managed to get. It took us about half an hour to get to the beach. But it didn't matter, as it turned out a few days later. Suddenly our happy sunny days were over. It started to rain. It 3.……. cleared up for a while but then the rain went on again. All we could do was to spend all our time in the cinema or in a cafe. It was impossible to leave because we had made reservations 4.………and we had to spend another week there. I had never seen so many films in my life. 5.….. the week I got very tired of the cinema and I could only lie on the bed reading books or staring at the ceiling.

At last the happy day of our 6.…… came. You can't imagine how astonished we were. The sun began to shine early in the morning. It seemed to me that it was laughing at us. After that holiday we decided to spend every summer in the country.

You are going to listen to the text “My winter holidays”. Listen carefully and then put the words into space places. One is extra.

My winter holidays

Winter holidays are shorter than summer ones. They begin at the end of 1.…… and last about two weeks. It is so nice to have a rest from school.

During winter holidays we celebrate the New Year’s Eve and Christmas. There are New Year parties for children at schools and theatres. Cinemas show children films and cartoons.

It is usually very cold in winter, but frost and snow can’t keep children indoors. It’s so great to go skiing down a hill. Boys like to play hockey on the ice. Many children go to the skating-rinks to skate. Small children play snowballs and make snowmen, or ride on the sledges happily.

When the weather is bad, I stay at home and watch TV. There is always something interesting on during winter holidays. Sometimes my friends come to see me and we play computer games or listen to music. There is also more time for reading, drawing, making model planes and other hobbies. Holidays pass quickly and soon it’s time to go to school again.

Winter holidays are even more 2. …….because we celebrate New Year and Christmas. Our mood is joyful. The whole atmosphere is full of magic. People exchange presents, decorate their homes, cook3.…………, visit each other and have parties.

If the weather is cold I prefer to stay at home or visit my friends. They can also come to my place. We play computer games, surf the Internet or watch TV. The programmes on TV are really interesting during our holidays, so we watch plenty of cool films. In warm weather we go to the cinema or a café, play 4. ……or go skiing to the park. Hockey and skiing are my hobbies. We can even play snowballs and make funny snowmen.

In the evening my mother often asks me to help her about the house. My duty is washing up, watering plants and taking the rubbish out. As I don’t have to get up early during my holidays my parents allow me to watch TV and read books till 5. ………...

I enjoy my 6. ……….. It’s a nice time to relax and take a short rest from my studies. It’s a pity that winter holidays always pass so quickly.

Today, it is quite a simple matter to send a letter or postcard almost anywhere in the world. A day or so later, you can be reasonably certain that your correspondence will have reached its 2) ......... . This is all very different to what the situation was like before the postal reforms that Sir Rowland Hill introduced in Great Britain in 1840. Before that time, it was not the sender of the letter who paid the postage, but the receiver, and the 3) ........ he or she had to pay depended on how many pages were in the letter and how far it had travelled. This system was slow, complicated, and very inefficient. The stamp was very simple in design with the profile of Queen Victoria against a black background. Above and below the Queen’s face were the words ‘One Penny’. Computers

Lately computers have filled our life. We do not 1. … our leisure without this miracle-machine.

They have much better memories and they can store much information. No man alive can do 500,000 sums in one second, but a computer can. In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can predict weather, and even play chess, write poetry or compose music. With the help of computers the Internet has entered into our life. It’s a brilliant source of information because the internet is a big encyclopedia. Now people cannot live a day without checking of mail and visiting their favourite sites. The Internet is not only the assistant in daily work, it is also the other world in which there are mail boxes, libraries, photo galleries, games, shops. The internet gives us a chance to communicate with people all over the world. It is interesting to learn about a life in 2. …….countries and you can practice English talking to native speakers. Also you can use the internet if you are looking for a job or to find people who share your interests. By means of the Internet people can travel to different cities, visit tourist places.

You are going to listing the person talking about a type of diet. Choose the correct parts of sentences (A-G) to complete gaps 1-6. There is one extra part of a sentence you do not need to use. Write your answers in the table.

Type of diet

During recent years, people have become obsessed with their weight. The desire of people to look like their favourite movie star or supermodel has prompted an almost endless list of celebrity-endorsed diets. Actress Jodie Foster says ‘Yes!’ to the Beverly Hills Diet, Kylie Minogue uses the Montignac Diet and Sarah-Michelle Gellar even gives a thumbs up to a Cabbage Soup Diet! But no nutritional programme has gained quite so much attention as the world-famous Atkins Diet.

Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston and Catherine Zeta-Jones are just a few of the personalities 1) ……… . So what is ‘Atkins’, why does it have such a high-profile following and, more importantly, is it safe?

The basic idea of the diet is quite simple. Atkins dieticians claim that carbohydrates are the reason 2) ……… . These included foodstuffs such as flour and sugar, like you would find in a cake. Our bodies burn carbohydrates first. So the Atkins scientists say that if we cut down on these carbohydrates, our bodies will search for other forms of energy to burn instead. When our bodies burn fat, we naturally become less hungry, 3) ……… .

Not everybody thinks 4) ……… . Several nutritionists have said that the diet upsets the balance of fruit and vegetable intake 5) ……… . The human body needs a variety of minerals and vitamins and these should be part of any diet. It is also thought that the Atkins diet is too low in fibre, which is mainly found in bread, cereals and potatoes. There is wide scientific agreement that lack of fibre can cause serious stomach problems. However, an Atkins spokesman has rejected claims made about flaws in the diet. He agrees that the intake of fruit and vegetables is reduced at the beginning of the diet, 6) ……… . Dieters also are encouraged not to neglect fibre and the Atkins website advertises a special range of bread and cereals which ensure that a person’s nutritional needs are met.

A number of scientific studies back the claim that Atkins is a good way to lose weight quickly as noticeable results can easily be seen after a short length of time. Life in the limelight is very likely the reason that celebrities choose to use this diet, but if you are considering trying it, you should consult a doctor first. Atkins is only successful if it is well-planned, nutritious and includes regular exercise.
