2 What were your hobbies? _______________

3 Did you write only school stuff? _________________

4 When did you first think that you wanted to work in the media? ___________

5 What was your first job, and how did you get it? ____________________

6 What other jobs have you had? ________________

7 What is your advice to young people who want to get into journalism?

8 What do you enjoy about journalism? _________________

9 What’s the worst thing about working in journalism? ___________________

A It’s a great buzz; I like knowing stuff and then being able to pass it on to the audience. I really enjoyed that on radio and at Newsround I really like making stuff enjoyable and understandable for kids.

В I only liked English and Art, that was it. I hated everything else — I really did. History, Geography, sciences — I hated them all. But I loved English.

С I did hospital radio and I spent a lot of time going to see bands. I was heavily into music.

D I was trying to get into radio so I didn’t write a lot. I got my experience in hospital radio and then got work experience at the local BBC station and the local commercial station. That’s where I started writing for news bulletins.

E When I was about ten, I’m not sure why but mainly I was really into radio and loved listening to it. I wanted to be one of the news broadcasters and I found out that to get into radio news you had to be a journalist. My dad wanted me to be a lawyer.

F I worked as a broadcast journalist on Red Rose Radio in Lancashire. I was doing some journalist work during the course. The editor I worked for told me that the editor of Red Rose was looking for a journalist, so it was an example of how important networking is.

G I have been a researcher on the Guinness Book of Records and I also worked at BBC local radio stations and commercial stations. I worked as a correspondent for a news service that puts bulletins on mobile phones. Now I work for the Newsround website.

H The worst bit about this work is the hours. It is shift work (работа no сменам): and I don’t think it will ever change.

I You have to be very keen and very confident because of all the competition. Get as much experience as you can by working in the areas that you are interested in. If you are not going to go to college then you have to get a lot of experience. It’s harder to work your way up but I know a lot of people who have done it. It’s another route.

2.Read through the following sentences, cross the wrong word(s) in each sentence and write the correct one(s) in the space provided. There is an example at the beginning.

0) At school Shelley only liked English and History. ART

1) Shelley's hobby was music and she spent a lot of time going to play in bands.

2) Shelley was trying to get into radio so she didn't read a lot.

3) At school Shelley got her experience in home radio .

4) Then she got work experience at the regional BBC station and the local commercial station.

5) That's where Shelley started writing for new bulletins.

6) Shelley knew that to get into radio news you had to listen to be a radio fan.

7) But her granddad wanted her to be a lawyer. 8) On Red Nose Radio in Lancashire Shelley worked as a broadcast journalist.

9) Among others Shelley has been a reader of the Guinness Book of Records.

10) She also worked for a news service that puts bulletins on websites.

11) Now shelley works for the Round the News website.

12) Sheelly thinks that the best thing about working in the media is shift work.

13) Sheelly thinks that if a person is not going to go to college then she or he should have to do a lot of experiments.

14) Shelleyreally likes reading stuff enjoyable and understandable for kids .

A. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs

B. Use Alternative Medicine

C. Staying in Shape is Important

E. Turn a Bad Habit into a Good Idea

F. Fat People Are at Risk

G. Prevention Is Better than Cure

H. Choose Proper Nutrition

1.There are numerous problems associated with obesity. It is not just a cosmetic problem but also a health hazard. Doctors generally agree that the more obese a person is, the more likely he or she is to have health problems. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions. People who are overweight can gain significant health benefits from losing weight.

2.Hey, couch potato! Don’t feel guilty indulging in serials or reality shows – use the commercials as an excuse to burn calories. There is probably an average of 15 minutes of commercials in an hour-long program. If you exercised through each commercial break during just two hours of TV, you’d already have met the recommended amount of daily exercise necessary to reduce health risk.

3.Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can help avoid a lot of problems in the future. The main aim of a checkup is to detect illness at an early stage. It's good to find out that you have a health problem before it is too late so appropriate tests should be done at the right time.

4.Do you mainly exercise for a few weeks in January before you forget your New Year's resolution, and then again when you realize your summer holiday is around the corner? You'd not be alone, but keeping fit is something you should do all year round. You might not be particularly bothered about your appearance or your weight, but keeping fit is as much about what's on the inside as it is what's on the outside.

5.Pain is our body's means to indicate that something is wrong and requires immediate attention. Pain for a short time can be taken care of by a painkiller but if the soreness is lingering for too long, then it requires proper medical expertise. Sometimes life menacing problems have back pain and joint pain as symptoms and can, if neglected, do permanent damage.

6.Think about your car- the higher the grade of the fuel you put in it, the better it runs. Your body works the same way. If you eat healthy food, you'll be healthier and feel better. Eating well is easy if you aware of what foods are best for you. But don’t worry! Eating healthy food doesn’t mean eliminating every single thing you love from your diet.

7.Do you spend more than 3 hours a day working or maybe playing on a computer? If so, you are at a higher risk than casual computer users. Researchers warn that watching a computer screen for six or more hours a day might be linked to a progressive eye disease. This doesn’t mean, however, that people who work on a computer for less than 3 hours a day will not suffer eye complications due to computer use.

A. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs

B. Use Alternative Medicine

C. Staying in Shape is Important

E. Turn a Bad Habit into a Good Idea

F. Fat People Are at Risk

G. Prevention Is Better than Cure

H. Choose Proper Nutrition

1. There are numerous problems associated with obesity. It is not just a cosmetic problem but also a health hazard. Doctors generally agree that the more obese a person is, the more likely he or she is to have health problems. This is because obesity has been linked to several serious medical conditions. People who are overweight can gain significant health benefits from losing weight.

2. Hey, couch potato!

3. Regular checkups are a valuable tool in maintaining good health. Taking proper care of your health at the right time can help avoid a lot of problems in the future. The main aim of a checkup is to detect illness at an early stage. It's good to find out that you have a health problem before it is too late so appropriate tests should be done at the right time.

4. Do you mainly exercise for a few weeks in January before you forget your New Year's resolution, and then again when you realize your summer holiday is around the corner? You'd not be alone, but keeping fit is something you should do all year round. You might not be particularly bothered about your appearance or your weight, but keeping fit is as much about what's on the inside as it is what's on the outside.

5. Pain is our body's means to indicate that something is wrong and requires immediate attention. Pain for a short time can be taken care of by a painkiller but if the soreness is lingering for too long, then it requires proper medical expertise. Sometimes life menacing problems have back pain and joint pain as symptoms and can, if neglected, do permanent damage.

6. Think about your car- the higher the grade of the fuel you put in it, the better it runs. Your body works the same way. If you eat healthy food, you'll be healthier and feel better. Eating well is easy if you aware of what foods are best for you. But don’t worry! Eating healthy food doesn’t mean eliminating every single thing you love from your diet.

7. Do you spend more than 3 hours a day working or maybe playing on a computer? If so, you are at a higher risk than casual computer users. Researchers warn that watching a computer screen for six or more hours a day might be linked to a progressive eye disease. This doesn’t mean, however, that people who work on a computer for less than 3 hours a day will not suffer eye complications due to computer use.

One gorgeous, sunny day last summer, Claire and her friend Greg went to Longleat Safari Park.

When they drove into the park, they closed the car windows tightly. "We don't want to be a lion's lunch," Claire laughed. Soon, they saw some lions. Greg stopped the car very close to the lions and started taking pictures of them. The lions roared loudly. "They're beautiful, but nothing happened. Suddenly, smoke began to come out of the engine.

A few minutes later, the front of the car was on fire. They wanted to jump out of the car, but they couldn't because the lions were around it. They were both really scared. "We'll burn alive!" Claire screamed desperately. She beeped the horn and shouted for help. Just then, a park ranger came along the road in his jeep. "Hold on, we'll get you out!" he shouted. Almost immediately, another jeep arrived and chased away the lions. Claire and Greg jumped out of the car quickly and ran towards the jeep.

When they were safe inside the jeep, they thanked the park ranger for his help. They were still shocked, but happy. They knew they were very lucky to be alive.

4.Read the text about “Sister Wendy” and then do the task.

Sister Wendy, TV Star!

Sister Wendy Beckett has been a nun for nearly 50 years, since she was 16. Most of the time she lives in solitary confinement in a caravan in the grounds of a Carmelite monastery in Norfolk, often not speaking to anyone for 22 hours a day. But every few months she leaves her caravan and travels round Europe, staying in international hotels and eating in famous restaurants. Why is she leading this double life? How does a nun who has devoted her life to solitude and prayer become a visitor to the Ritz?

Sister Wendy has a remarkable other life. She writes and presents an arts programme for BBC television called “Sister Wendy`s Grand Tour”. In it, she visits European art capitals and gives her personal opinions on some of the world`s most famous works of art. She begins each programme with these words: “For over 20 years I lived in solitude. Now I`m seeing Europe for the first time. I`m visiting the world`s most famous art treasures.”

She speakes clearly and plainly, with none of the academic verbosity of art historians. TV viewers love her common-sense wisdom, and are fascinated to watch a kind, elderly, bespectacled, nun who is obviously delighted by all she sees. They are infected by her enthusiasm. Sister Wendy believes that although God wants her to have a life of prayer and solitary contemplation, he has also given her a mission to explain art in a simple manner to ordinary people. She says: “I think God has been very good to me. Really I am a disaster as a person. Solitude is right for me because I`m not good at being with other people. But of course I enjoy going on tour. I have a comfortable bed, a luxurious bath and good meals, but the joy is mild compared with the joy of solitude and silent prayer. I always rush back to my caravan. People find this hard to understand. I have never wanted anything else; I am a blisfully happy woman.”

Sister Wendy`s love of God and art is matched only by her love of good food and wine. She takes delight in poring over menus, choosing a good wine and wondering whether the steak is tender enough for her to eat because she has no back teeth. However, she is not delighted by her performance on television.

I can`t bear to watch myself on television. I feel that I look so silly – a ridiculous blackclothed figure. Thank God we don`t have a television at the monastery. I suppose I am famous in a way, but as 95% of my time is spent alone in my caravan, it really doesen`t affect me. I`m unimportant.”

Sister Wendy earned £1, 200 for the first series. The succes of this resulted in an increase for the second series. The money is being used to provide new shower rooms for the Carmelite monastery.

Say if the sentence is true or false:

  1. Sister Wendy spends a lot of time alone.

  2. She travels to art capitals all over the world.

  3. Her television programmes are popular because she meets famous art historians and interviews them.

  4. She only eats plain food and she doesn`t drink alcohol.

  5. She loves watching herself on television.

  6. The other nuns at the monastery always watch her programmers on television.

  7. Sister Wendy is using the money she has earned to improve the monastery.

Robbie's first business!

Robbie enjoyed art most at school. He liked maths and music too, but because it was hard for Robbie to spell words correctly or to understand texts, he didn't enjoy being at school. In English, he had lots of problems. So, when Robbie was 12, his parents decided to teach Robbie differently at home. There he learnt about business and working on computers and spent more time happily studying art and playing his guitar.

Robbie's grandmother started teaching him to cook too, which, like his mother and aunt, he really enjoyed doing. One day, she told him her secret way of making jam. Soon Robbie made too much for the family to eat so he took it to the friends in his street. He made more and more jam. It tasted so good that the other people started buying it from him. Robbie added all his costs together and decided on a price. Then he made a business plan on the computer with help from his dad. Now Robbie sells his jam at a weekly market. It tastes wonderful and it's healthy because Robbie uses juice and use no sugar to make it.

"I'm still only 14 but I'm already a businessman", Robbie laughs. “Last week l got £93 because 87 different customers bought 52 kilos of my jam, and a supermarket wants to sell it too. My career is in jam-making I think!"

II READING COMPREHENSION

Read the text below and choose the right answer to the questions after the text.

I'm very worried when people throw away litter. Think of all the litter around. Soon there won't be any more places free of it. People should do something about litter before it's too late! The Earth is effected by this pollution. Litter goes into the water and spoils it. We can not live without water. Water must be clean. We can reduce water pollution. We shouldn't throw litter into the water. We must put litter into garbage bins.

As for the air, there are more and more factories and cars in our world with each day. They produce CO2. CO2 is bad for our health and it is also bad for the environment. Plus CO2 causes climate change and global warming. We need clean air to stay alive. But factories and cars pollute the air. What can we do to reduce air pollution? On my opinion, we can walk or cycle to school instead of going by cars.

Also forests help us to reduce air pollution because they produce O2. So, forests can help to clean the air from CO2. But people use a lot of paper nowadays. We need paper at homes, at work, at school, almost everywhere. The more paper we use, the more trees are cut down. What must we do to save forests? As for me, I think we must recycle paper. But a lot of people don't recycle paper, because they think it's a waste of time. But it isn't correct. When paper is recycled, less trees are cut down. So, we must recycle our paper to save forests.

Baby Hal

We use computers every day, for lots of different things. Computers build things, they help us communicate and solve problems. Powerful supercomputers can do 100 trillion calculations per second. But now computers can do more than calculate; they can learn from their experience too. IBM’s computer Deep Blue beat the world champion chess player Gary Kasparov. Its big advantage is that it doesn’t get tired, and it never forgets a move.

Now those computers can learn from experience, the next stage is a computer that can think for itself.

A company called Artificial Intelligence (AL) is developing a new computer program. The program is in a computer called Baby Hal. It helps Baby Hal learn a language in the same way humans do. Hal is the name of the intelligent computer in the science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. That computer was dangerous and hurt people, but Baby Hal is not a dangerous computer. Anat Treister-Goren is teaching Baby Hal to learn a language in the same way that humans learn from their mothers.

Anat is very proud of Hal. She says ‘Well done’, when Hal solves a problem and she corrects its wrong answers on the computer keyboard. Baby Hal enjoys learning about the world by playing games and listening to stories just like a child. Hal’s language level is the same as an 18-month-old baby, but its vocabulary is growing fast, and it’s making words into sentences.

Computers are part of our lives. They give us information, help us at work, and do the shopping. But powerful machines like Baby Hal, that can think for themselves, need good parents. We don’t want dangerous computers that make the wrong decisions, like Hal in the film 2001.

  1. Deep Blue can remember all its chess moves.

  2. Baby Hal can speak different languages.

  3. The film 2001: Space Odyssey is about Baby Hal.

  4. Baby Hal uses language like a child.

  5. Anat Treister-Goren talks to Baby Hal through a keyboard.

  6. Baby Hal can’t make sentences.

  7. Anat reads stories to Baby Hal.

  8. Baby Hal can give information and advice.

WRITING

Write a letter to Kate. Answer her questions. Write 90-100 words. Remember the rules of letter-writing.

Dear friend,

How are you? I like London very much. It’s really a beautiful city, but the weather is not always good. It’s very hot and humid now. It’s often humid because the city is on the river Thames. When the weather is like this, I like to go to the museums, because they are all air-conditioned. The winter is usually cold and wet, and I don’t like to be outside long then. My favourite seasons here are spring and autumn because they are really nice. It’s usually cool and sunny, and I like to go on picnics and jog.

Yours,

Kate
