Choosing a Career


S ooner or later all of us face the problem of choosing a career when we are to decide what we are going to be in future. Choosing a career is not a simple matter — in fact, it can be one of the most important in our life. You don't need to hurry making a decision. You should examine thoroughly your abilities and character, take a realistic view of your strengths and weaknesses, pay attention to your parents' and friends' advice and take into account your own preferences.

Nowadays there is a great variety of jobs to any taste. Choosing a future career, we should consider the following things.

  • If you are going to be independent, successful and wealthy, you have to find a well-paid job. Moreover, if you are going to have a family, you should be ready to support it, to be a breadwinner.

  • Further training, promotion prospects and job conditions should also be kept in mind. Just after graduating it is very difficult to find a plum job which will respond to all your preferences.

  • Place of work. You ought to decide whether you want to work indoors (cashier, chemist, librarian, secretary, etc.) or outdoors (driver, firefighter, estate agent, etc.). Your choice may be based on your lifestyle or health condition.

  • Communication with different people. If you think you have it, you may choose a profession involving close contacts with people, such as a doctor, a journalist, a lawyer, a guide, a teacher.

  • Business trips. You should keep in mind that some professions imply travelling all over the world, such as tour guides, scientists, actors, journalists, pilots and so on. It's not always fun. Such trips may be very exhausting and stressful. However, if you are young, ambitious and full of energy, you will be able not only to do your job successfully but also see the world.

  • Jobs connected with risk. Such jobs are usually well-paid, but very dangerous. A police officer, a fireman, a bodyguard, a lifeguard — these are the names of jobs which imply risk.


Analyzing all these points will help you not to make a wrong choice.


Choosing a career should not only be a matter of future prestige and wealth. Work should bring real satisfaction; otherwise your whole life will become dull and monotonous.

O ne of the most difficult decisions in our life is choosing what to do for a living when we grow up.  Finishing school means starting independent lives and choosing one of the roads: a technical school or a university. Starting our life with a right profession is very important because the future of young people depends on this choice. That is why they must choose it with utmost care analyzing all pros and cons. Besides our friends and older relatives can influence our choice or just give a good piece of advice.

It isn’t easy to find a good job. You could be a very pleasant personality but still the employers won’t give you the position of your dream if you don’t have proper qualifications for that kind of job. So it’s essential to analyze what education and what skills are required for your job. To be good at computers and to have a good command of English is absolutely necessary for modern jobs.

In our modern fast paced world there are plenty of new interesting and socially important professions. The future profession must not be boring for you. It should suit your interests and your features of character. You might choose working indoors or outdoors, dealing with people or just with papers. In other words, you should enjoy the work you do. It should also satisfy your career plans and professional ambitions. It should provide us with a chance of professional growth and personal development.

I am sure that all of us want to earn as much money as possible.  However, many young people are wise enough to follow a definite career and earn quite a low salary at the beginning. They realize that they have good prospects in a company that trains its staff and soon they can climb the career ladder. At the same time there are young people who would rather prefer taking any kind of work because they just need an income. Even so we must admit that any temporary jobs help us gain much useful experience and we can learn a lot.




Task. You are going to give a talk about choosing a career. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (12-15 sentences).


R emember to say:

  • if it is easy to choose a career? Why; why not;

  • what advice you can give to a person thinking about choosing a career;

  • who can give you good advice;

  • when it is necessary to start thinking about your future profession.

Man and Nature


T he Earth is a home for humans. Here they have all that is necessary for life: air, water, food. The nature feeds us, gives us materials for buildings and clothes, provides with mineral resources. Our environment is a source of inspiration for musicians, artists, writers, and scientists. Nature do not only please our eyes, it also takes care of our health. We gain strength when we breathe the fresh air, swim in the clear rivers and lakes. However, people often do not appreciate it. They use natural resources, waste them, without giving anything in return.                                                   

Some people think that the nature can live without people, but I disagree with this opinion. Nature is so exhausted now! It needs our care and protection. We should stop pollute it, clean rivers' and lakes' banks, grow more plants (they are called the "lungs of the Earth"). Before doing something everyone must think whether his actions hurt the nature. Because if they hurt, finally it will hurt people themselves.

 The world is full of wonders and mysteries, which we can discover during all our life. The nature is everywhere: look at a thin blade of grass, catch the aroma of wild flower, feed a homeless kitten. Look! there are a lot of beauty around us! We live in a very beautiful place as well. We have famous and unique lake Baikal. A lot of tourists came there throughout a year to have a rest and enjoy the nature. Nowadays Baikal is very polluted and needs our help.


Each of us can participate in the protection of nature. We should not forget how beautiful our world is! Unity of people and nature is power, harmony and guarantee for the future!



Task. You are going to give a talk about Man and Nature. You will have to start in 5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences).



Remember to say:

  • if it is necessary to protect our environment; why;

  • what the most serious environmental problems are;

  • what people should do to protect nature;

  • what your attitude to the problem is.

The word environment means simply what is around us: the air we breathe, the soil on which we stand and walk, the water we drink. The most serious environmental problems are:

• pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution);

• noise from cars, buses, planes, etc.,

• destruction of wildlife and the beauty of the countryside;

• shortage of natural resources (metals, different kinds of fuel);

• the growth of population.

Sport and Health


Sport plays an important role in the life of teenagers. People who go in for sports and lead a healthy lifestyle are actually healthier than those who don’t.

To my mind, healthy lifestyle is more popular nowadays because more and more people face health problems more often than in the past and especially obesity is one of the most pressing problems of the modern world.

As far as I’m concerned, I go in for sports too. It’s swimming, I train twice a week. Besides, I follow a diet and rarely eat junk food.

Speaking about my region, there are some sports activities that are quite popular among the youth. They are basketball, football, volleyball and tennis. These kinds of sports are not only useful for health, but also allow teenagers to learn how to work as a team.

To my mind, sport is popular among teens because it not only helps to lose excessive weight and to stay fit, but also feel vigorous and spirited throughout the day. Besides, doing sports is quite popular today in general, especially due to the bad ecological situation we have nowadays.

Speaking about my school, there are a lot of interesting sport clubs, such as football, volleyball, basketball, swimming, and all of them are quite popular among our pupils – they are not only useful for our health, but also teach us how to work as a team.

There are a lot of opportunities for keeping fit and healthy besides sports. You can follow a diet or separate nutrition. For example, if you eat separately, you can eat almost anything, but not at the same time, so you do not gain excessive weight.

As for me, in my free time I usually walk, hang out at home or go to gym. Most of all I enjoy training in the gym, there I attend cross-fit and yoga classes.

To conclude, a healthy person doesn’t smoke, eats healthy food and prefers doing sports to watching them.



Task. You are going to give a talk about Sport and Health. You will have to start in 5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences).

Topic 1. Life experience


Life is a never-ending learning experience. Throughout life people have many memorable events. Each of them taught us the most valuable lessons about life in both good and bad times. But there are also special moments that are really exciting and breathtaking. And even the memories of them make you smile, make your eyes shine. I am talking about such moments.


I believe that the most exciting experience awaits me in the future. Therefore, I just want to tell you about some event that brought me sincere joy.


When I was 11 years old, I was lucky enough to visit Ireland – in my opinion, one of the most interesting European countries. Of course, Ireland itself is very impressive – beautiful nature, rich folklore. One day we went to an outdoor water park. There was a lot of entertainment, but I will always remember only one thing. It was a steep water slide coming down from a cliff. It took some time to decide to go down this slide, as I was very afraid of heights. But believe me, it was worth it! I experienced an unimaginable mixture of emotions – fear and delight at the same time. I still remember that feeling. Maybe if I'd been there today, I wouldn't have been so excited. But I've never experienced anything like this on any other entertainment. Maybe I should try riding a roller coaster?


Having my own adventure has proven to me that anything is possible and that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. This experience was a life-changing one for me and absolutely changed me for the better.


Topic 2. My School Life experience


Some people think that school years are the happiest in their lives. As for me, I can't say whether it's right or not. I'm 13 years old, and it's hard for me to say if my future will be happier than my past.


School years can certainly be quite happy. However, even today there are many problems related to school life and personality formation. People evaluate this stage of their life experience differently. School years are a time of great expectations and strong emotions. School is the first real experience of real life. But here, at school, a person not only accumulates knowledge, the school helps its students to succeed in life and become successful.


The school plays a very important social role. It provides quality education to students between the ages of 6 and 17. It unites children with different interests and experiences. The school provides students with the opportunity to develop their abilities, satisfy their curiosity and realize themselves as individuals, and helps students form certain beliefs. Conditions have been created here that allow students and teachers to make the most of their time. In addition, the school provides students with the opportunity to continue their education or start working.


I spend a lot of time at school. But we don't just study at school. We also have extracurricular activities. They are a part of our school life. Our social and cultural life is well organized. We often go to museums and theaters. I like my classmates and we often spend time together. I feel like I can rely on my friends in a difficult moment.


In conclusion, I can say that my life experience of studying at school is very interesting and positive.

Crime in our society

Crimes have surrounded us for centuries. Every day, when we open a newspaper or turn on the TV, almost everything we read or hear concerns criminals and their illegal actions. According to the law, people who have committed crimes must be punished. Without punishment, our life in society would be less safe.

Currently, crime is a daily problem for citizens and causes feelings of insecurity and sadness. There are many types of crimes such as kidnapping, murder, smuggling, forgery, arson, carjacking and so on. In my country, due to the poor economic situation we currently live in, shoplifting, burglary and drug trafficking are becoming more frequent than ever before.

We must regretfully admit that today a large number of crimes are committed by teenagers who want to become independent as soon as possible and find an easy way to earn money. Teenagers use drugs and alcohol, so they do not control themselves. Moreover, modern television and movies contain a lot of violence and often have a huge negative impact on teenagers.

What should we do to prevent crime? Every member of the community should be responsible for their own safety and make wise decisions. Cameras can be used to prevent crimes inside and outside your home, to capture and track criminal behaviour. This will help you ensure the safety of your car, home and business.

Education is necessary in order to be involved in public life and contribute to the prevention of crime. Study the laws and follow them. If you notice any strange activity in your area, call the police.

In conclusion, I would like to say that crime prevention in our society is an extremely difficult task, because we need to change our social and moral principles in general.
