Lady’s Luggage (Translation of the Verse “Luggage” by S.Ya. Marshak)

The Lady has put into the luggage a sofa, a suitcase, a valise, a picture, a basket, a cardboard and a little dog.

At the station the Lady has been delivered four green tickets of having obtained the luggage:

A sofa,

A suitcase,

A valise,

A picture,

A basket,

A cardboard

And a little dog.

The things are being brought to the platform, they being thrown into the open wagon.

It’s done.

The luggage is put: a sofa, a suitcase, a valise, a picture, a basket, a cardboard and a little dog.

But the bell has just rung.

The puppy has run away from the wagon.

They have missed it at Bottom Station: one place is being lost.

They count the luggage in fright: a sofa, a suitcase, a valise, a picture, a basket, a cardboard…

– Comrades, where is a little dog?

They suddenly see a huge, irritated hound, standing near the wheels.

They have got it and have put into the luggage, where there was the luggage: a sofa, a suitcase, a valise, a picture, a basket, a cardboard and where there was a little dog before.

They have arrived the town of Zhitomir.

Porter № 15 is rolling a cart with the luggage: a sofa, a suitcase, a valise, a picture, a basket, a cardboard, and they are leading a little dog behind the luggage.

The dog is roaring suddenly, and the Madam is yelling suddenly: “Gangsters! Thieves! Freaks! The dog is of the wrong breed”!

She has thrown a case and has kicked a sofa, a picture, a basket, a cardboard…

– Return my little dog to me!

– Sorry, Mummy! At the station we have gained the luggage due to the luggage ticket from you:

A sofa,

A suitcase,

A valise,

A picture,

A basket,

A cardboard

And a little dog.

However, the dog could have grown for the way span!

Багаж

Дама сдавала в багаж:
Диван,
Чемодан,
Саквояж,
Картину,
Корзину,
Картонку
И маленькую собачонку.

Выдали даме на станции
Четыре зелёных квитанции
О том, что получен багаж:
Диван,
Чемодан,
Саквояж,
Картина,
Корзина,
Картонка
И маленькая собачонка.

Вещи везут на перрон.
Кидают в открытый вагон.
Готово. Уложен багаж:
Диван,
Чемодан,
Саквояж,
Картина,
Корзина,
Картонка
И маленькая собачонка.

Но только раздался звонок,
Удрал из вагона щенок.
Хватились на станции Дно:
Потеряно место одно.
В испуге считают багаж:
Диван,
Чемодан,
Саквояж,
Картина,
Корзина,
Картонка...
- Товарищи!
Где собачонка?

Вдруг видят: стоит у колёс
Огромный взъерошенный пёс.
Поймали его - и в багаж,
Туда, где лежал саквояж,
Картина,
Корзина,
Картонка,
Где прежде была собачонка.

Приехали в город Житомир.
Носильщик пятнадцатый номер
Везёт на тележке багаж:
Диван,
Чемодан,
Саквояж,
Картину,
Корзину,
Картонку,
А сзади ведут собачонку.

Собака-то как зарычит.
А барыня как закричит:
- Разбойники! Воры! Уроды!
Собака - не той породы!

Швырнула она чемодан,
Ногой отпихнула диван,
Картину,
Корзину,
Картонку...
- Отдайте мою собачонку!

- Позвольте, мамаша На станции,
Согласно багажной квитанции,
От вас получили багаж:
Диван,
Чемодан,
Саквояж,
Картину,
Корзину,
Картонку
И маленькую собачонку.
Однако
За время пути
Собака
Могла подрасти!
