Lake Baikal called See, Sacred See, Our Pearl. The lake is world-famous for its amazing nature and beauty. It is more than 20million years old. It is the world’s oldest and deepest lake ; its central basin has a depth of 1636 meters. It covers a great territory in Russia extending 636 kilometers from the south to the north; its width is 79 kilometers. It is equal to the areas of Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands. It contains more than a quarter of the fresh water reserves of the Earth.
The water in Baikal is crystal-clear. 336 rivers flow into Lake Baikal, and the Angara is the only river which flows out of the Lake. There are lots of old legends about Baikal, its secrecy and wisdom that are still being told by old people. A lot of people lived on the Baikal shore. In the Middle Ages people used to call the Lake Tengiz in the Mongolian language, then, before the Russians explored (conquested) this part in Siberia, Baikal had been called Baigal-dalai or standing fire (Baikal as the reflection of heaven).
Lake Baikal has 20 islands. The biggest island is the Olkhon the heart of Baikal; it is situated in its middle. The shape of the island is like the shape of Baikal. The Olkhon is 74 kilometers long, 12 kilometers wide. Sunny days are often in the year. The Olkhon is rich in mountains, forests, steppes. The island is an old land.
There were found about 143 archeological things: wooden settlements, stone doors and others. There is a famous religious shaman place which used to be called 13 Noyons. According this legend, Chingis-khan and his guards left inscriptions on the rocks.
One of the honored place on the Olkhon is mount Eshimei. It is 1276 meters high. They say a black bear in an iron page lives n the top of the mount. Winds at Lake Baikal play significant roles. –All in all there are 30 strong winds there. The most famous of them is Barguzin wind which provides the Lake with sunny days. The Barguzin lows from the south to the east.
The strongest wind is Sarma. It blows 40-60 meters in a second. The highest
waves are 10 meters high. The wind from the west-south is the Kultuk. It brings rain.
1400 animals and about 850 plants inhabit Baikal and 848 animals and 133 plants are endemic - they exist only in Baikal. Baikal is inhabited by 50 fish species , the world-famous of them is omul. The biggest omul is 50 cm long, its weight is 5 kg. The omul lives from 5 to 14 years
For reproduction the omul swims up the tributaries of Baikal: the Upper Angara, the Kichera, the Selenga and other small rivers which flow into the Posolsk and the Chivyrkuisk gulf.
There is a mysterious viviparous fish - golomyanka. It throws 2-3 thousands of larvae into the water and perishes. Its body is not covered by scales. It is transparent and in the light one can see its skeleton. 3 per cent of golomyanka’s body consists of fat and it is used in the Tibetan medicine. The water temperature in summer is 12-15 degrees above zero.
