Lesson plan
Topic: Movie reviews
Level: Elementary-Pre-intermediate
Age: Teenagers
Time: 45 minutes
Aims:
to practice reading for gist and provide students with a model text
to identify terms and concepts that serve the basis for movie reviews
to practice in writing opinions
to develop critical thinking skills
Materials and equipment:
A movie trailer, appropriate for middle school learners
Film review worksheet
TV with a VHS, DVD or other media player
Procedure
1. Warming up (3 minutes)
Ask the class to think about the ingredients of a good movie and call out their ideas.
2. Checking homework (2 minutes)
3. Reading
a) pre –reading activity:(2min)
Join learners into pairs or small groups and ask them to think of a film they have both seen.
b) while- reading activity:(4 min)
Show them a movie trailer. Have the students fill out the review worksheet as they watch
c) after-reading activity (5 min)
Answer the questions:
1) What is the title of the film?
2) What genre is it?
3) What is it about?
4) When is the film set?
5) Who stars in the film?
4. Writing
a) Preparing for writing ,creating the review template:(3 min)
Ask students to make a review plan
b) writing process ( 20 min) :tell the students to think of a film they have watched and know a lot about. Ask them to use the template to write their own film review. If you have access to the Internet in the classroom, encourage SS to look up the information about the film they need to write the review (especially the original title of the film, for this use http://www.imdb.com/).
Optional for fast finishers: let them help weaker students. Organize peer check
5.Evaluation and reflection (Summing up)(5 min)
When students finished, get them to exchange the papers and read their partners' drafts. After reading, ask them to write two stars for two things they like and one plus for one thing to work on. -After peer feedback, get the students to take their papers back and to work on the improvements.
6. Homework (1 min)
Ask students to write their final draft.
