Class: the 10th grade

Level: intermediate

Topic: Genres of painting. English book 10-11 by S.Kalygulova, A.Iusupova

Objectives: by the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify 5 different painting genres and styles consisting some English vocabulary on the topic, understand the significance of each, and apply these genres in a creative work.

Target language: relative clauses that ,which, who (when defining genres),passive voice

be+ past participle+(by subject) (when describing painter`s works),expressing preferences about genres and styles I like ….I prefer…I`m fond of…

vocabularies:

stilllife,portrait,genre,easel,paint,artist,depict,masterpiece,landscape,paintbrushes,oilpaint,watercolor paint, describe, sketch, portray, canvas, etc.

Approaches : visual, interactive, and structured

Skills to be emphasized: integrated skills

Materials : a collection of visuals(ppt. slides or printed paintings, photos of painters, videos) of different painting genres, worksheets with structured exercises based on each genre, crayons, postcards, pencils, watercolor paints, paintbrushes, etc.

  • Introduce and describe the main genres with examples:

  • Portrait painting-is the depiction of some individual persons.its aim is to fix not only the outer appearance but also reflect the internal world of a man or a group of people.(I.N.Kramskoy,L.da Vinchi,Pablo Picasso,etc.)

  • Historical painting- depicts the people`s past.(Surikov,Gerasimov,leonardo da Vinchi,etc)

  • Genre painting-tells us about the labour,rest,joy and troubles,misfortunes and successes of common people.It reflects the problems worrying us.(Gapar Aitiyev,)

  • Landscape painting –is the depiction of nature.(Chuikov,Levitan,Picasso)

  • Still-life painting –is the depiction of everyday things,dishes,foods and foodstuff,fruits,vegetables,flowers.Still-life teaches us to value nature and every natural thing, no matter how small and unimportant it for us.(Van Gogh,Kontchalovskiy,Salvador Dali,Claude Monet,etc.)

  • While presenting the topic focus on Passive Voice,Relative clauses and teach the grammar structure of them.

  • Hand out worksheets which were written grammar structured sentences on the topic of painting

  • Students have to do the exercises, check the answers with their teacher

  • Then divide the students into small groups of 4 , give them the most famous paintings and the authors on the whiteboard.

  • Students discuss and categorize them into the correct genre and present their findings to the class

Application

To develop speaking or writing skills in a creative way



  • Then the students have to describe one of the above pictures getting information from the video and use vocabulary and grammar. The answers of the students will be as following:

Ex: “The Starry night” is a famous painting that was created by Van Gogh in 1889.In the painting, a night sky is shown, below the sky , a quiet village is portrayed.


The Mona Lisa” was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century. The woman ,who is believed to be Lisa Gherardini, is shown sitting with her hands gently folded, which are positioned in a graceful manner. Etc.


Ask the students -Which genre do you find most

interesting and why?

  • Students respond to the question: I like….I prefer….I`m fond of….

  • Then give the students painting supplies for creating their own picture.

Creative task- each student sketches a simple drawing based on their favorite genre and show it to the class and teacher
