Show/Define/ Draw

  • Prepare as many pieces of paper as you have students. On each piece of paper write either SHOW or DEFINE or DRAW. Put the scraps into a box. These are the instructions for your students. In a separate container place pieces of paper containing vocabulary items you wouldlike your students to revise.Divide your students into 2 teams. Divide the board into two columns. Their task is to guess the word or phrase and present the vocabulary item to their team in the assigned form one by one: SHOW it (miming), DEFINE it (describe what it means or make a sentence using it) or DRAW it (draw it on the board). The team scores a point if they manage to guess the word/expression is presented. Ask learners to write down these vocabulary items they didn’t manage to guess correctly. After you finish the game ask learners to individually make a sentence with the word/words they didn’t manage to guess.

List of words: bottle, map, treasure, find, rocks, volcano, palm tree, cave, see…

Pre-Listening

  • Ask learners what stories about pirates and treasure they already know. Write their names on the board. Tell learners you will now watch another story about the Greatest Treasure by Amit Garg.

  • Distribute handout 1 with the words and ask learners to glue it into their vocabularies. Practice their pronunciation showing the words on Slides.

While listening

  • Play the recording one time. Ask learners what happened in the story.

  • Give out Worksheet 1. Tell learners they should now fill in the gaps. Play the recording 2 more times. Pass out the tapescript for a pair and have ss underline the answer keys in context.

Additional information

Differentiation – how do you plan to give more support? How do you plan to challenge the more able learners?

Assessment – how are you planning to check learners’ learning?

Health and safety check

More able learners can be encouraged to write more for what words they learned that day at the end of the lesson. More able learners may be paired with students needing extra help for the TPS at the beginning of the lesson.

The teacher will be able to assess how well the students have acquired the new words through the Crossword solving task. The teacher will know how well the students are doing at writing the new words and sentences by circulating the room often and checking written work.

Lessons will be delivered in accordance with health and safety standards.
