Saturday Suggestions

1. It's a lovely Saturday afternoon. You are all bored at home.

Suggest somewhere to go.

2. You go outside and it starts to rain, so you go back inside.

Suggest something to do at home.

(Hotel Requests).

Could you help me with my suitcase?

Could you tell me how to call room to room?

Can you tell me what time the swimming pool opens?

(Apologizing).

Ex. 1 Read the following conversations. Where do they take place? What are all the people talking about?

Underline the expressions that express apology.

Costumer: Excuse me, the room is too cold. Could you lower the air conditioner please?

Apologies? Apologies!

Example: A: Excuse me! There appears to be a fly in my soup.

B: I’m very sorry about that.

A: Could you bring me a new bowl?

B: Certainly. One moment please.

Problem situation – music too loud

Possible solution – turn it down

Problem situation – wait too long

Possible solution – hurry up

Problem situation – drive too fast

Possible solution – slow down

Problem situation – slow computer

Possible solution – buy a new one

Problem situation – late for class

Possible solution – arrive on time

Possible solution – a new bowl

Problem situation – ordered tea, not coffee

Possible solution – a cup of tea

Problem situation – too dark

Possible solution – turn on the light

Possible solution – open a window

Problem situation – bought a pair of trousers, too short

Possible solution – a new pair

Making Excuses

  1. You didn't go to class.

  2. You didn't answer a phone call.

  3. You arrived an hour late for lunch.

  4. You missed a meeting.

  5. You didn't go to football practice.

  6. You didn't wish your friend happy birthday.

  7. You were late for class.

MONDAY TUESDAY

WEDNESDAY THURSDAY

FRIDAY SATURDAY

SUNDAY

(Gratitude).

Ex. 1 You are going to watch a video. Read the introduction. What the video is going to be about?

"Thank you" can be an incredibly powerful pair of words, especially if the person you're thanking really needs to hear them, or isn't expecting them. In this short TED talk, Dr. Laura Trice muses over the power of saying thank you, and reminds us why we should say it—and ask to hear it—more often.

The talk is only about three minutes, but Dr. Trice hits two big points—first, that most of us really do want to hear someone thank us for the things that we do, even if it's something that we're supposed to be doing anyway. Being appreciated is one of those things that really motivates us, both at work and in life, so a little goes a long way if you can offer up a genuine thank you when it's appropriate. Second, she notes that it's equally important in our relationships to make it clear when we want to be appreciated, otherwise we run the risk of never hearing it because the other people in our lives just assume, we already know we are, or that they don't need to say it. In other words, if you feel underappreciated, make it clear to the people in your life that you feel that way—anyone who actually cares about you will be more than willing to make sure that's no longer the case.
