American Football
1.________
This American game is enjoyed by a lot of people. It is played in schools, colleges and by professional teams. Unlike basketball and baseball, which are played in other parts of the world, this type of football, until recently, has been specifically American. In this game the players carry or throw the ball much more than they kick1 it. In the USA they call the game just football.
2._______
American football originated in the USA, where it remains the most popular sport. It is something like European football and rugby. The very first game was played as far back as in 1869, between two college teams, Rutgers and Princeton. Its rules have changed gradually.
3._________
Now the game is played by two teams of eleven athletes on a field 100 yards (91m) long from goal line to goal line, by 160 feet (49 m) wide. End zones extend 10 yards (9 m) behind each goal line. The field is marked with white lines every 5 yards along its length. The football which the players use has an oval shape and weighs about 450 grammes.
4._________
In this game the team, which controls the ball, tries to move along the field to the opponent's goal by running with the ball or passing it. At the same time, the other team do their best to stop the attacking team and take control of the ball for themselves.
5. ______
A game of American football lasts 60 minutes and is divided into four 15-minute quarters. Points are scored either by carrying the ball over the opponent's goal line (a touchdown), or by kicking the ball over the goalpost from any part of the field (a field goal). A touchdown gives the team 6 points; a field goal 3 points. The idea is to get more points than the opponent's team.

Alex: Hi, Kate! What are you doing?
Kate: Hi, Alex! Just reading.
Alex: Is it another adventure book?
Kate: No, it's a site about computers.
Alex: Wow! A site about computers? Computers are everywhere now. We use them for work and entertainment. You look so excited. Why?
Kate: The site is not about sitting in front of the screen. It's about people who make computers and write computer programs. Some of them are really famous and can be good role models.
Alex: Can they? It sounds interesting.
Kate: Take Bill Gates, for example. In 1975 before graduation he left Harvard University. And in 1977 with his childhood friend Paul Alien he started Microsoft.
Alex: I know it. The world's largest software company.
Kate: And ten years later he became the youngest billionaire ever. But what surprised me is that in 2000 together with his wife he created the charity organization "Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation". Now it works in the field of global health and learning. Besides that in 2010 Gates suggested that the richest people of the world should give half of their money to charity.
Alex: So he makes money and spends it on making people's lives better, doesn't he?
Kate: Absolutely. That's why I really respect and want to copy him. There is another example. Look at Larry Page who, together with Sergey Brin, founded Google in 1998.
Alex: Everybody knows Google now.
Kate: Larry Page also helps people. He spends money on exploring the problems of climate change and helping the poor.
Alex: I see, you want to help people, too. But first you should work hard at school and then enter university. What are you good at? Are you interested in computers?
Kate: Of course, I am.
Alex: Does it mean social networking sites like Facebook orTwitter? Making friends online is so easy now.
Kate: This is where you are wrong. I have joined a club for those who are fond of programing. It's called "Next". By the way, Bill Gates developed an interest in computers when he was at school? too. At the age of 13 he wrote his first computer program. As for Larry Page, his parents were computer science professors, and his childhood home was full of computers. His love for technology made him study Computer Science at Stanford University.
Alex: Now I see that they have really become your role models, you respect and want to copy them.
Kate: Absolutely. I'd like to help other people, so I am going to study Computer Science. I'm sure that's what I really want.
