Dear friends, try to forget that we are at the lesson. We are going to have a friendly talk about A.S. Pushkin, his biography and creative activity, his knowledge and usage of the English language. When we read books by this genious author we must not forget that he was brought up not only by the Russian literature but the European literature and the English literature that he loved and valued greatly.

We shall begin our lesson with phonetics and read Pushkin’s favourite song «Those evening bells». It was translated into Russian by Ivan Kozlov, Pushkin’s blind friend. Listen to the tape and repeat the words after the dictor. Now let’s sing this song together!
This year my family visited St. Petersberg. And at the monument to Pushkin some English people asked me about him. I answered them in a few words. And how can you characterize A.S. Pushkin? Use the sentence
«If I were there I would say …»
You are to remember some facts from Pushkin’s biography. Imagine that you are foreign people and somebody will be literary critics. We shall have a conference where you may ask each other questions. (Literary critics are the best pupils in the group).
At the age of 12 the future poet entered the newly-opened school for children of the nobility the Lyceum at Tsarskoe Selo. Sasha Pushkin spoke French perfectly well but he didn’t know the English language because English was not taught at the lyceum. But Pushkin wanted to read Byron’s poems in the original they were very popular at that time. And he began to learn English himself. Soon he could read English texts easily.
Literary critics distinguish three periods in Pushkin’s creative activity:
1.Byronism,
2.Shakespearmania,
3.Worship of W. Scott.
Now let’s speak about the first period of Pushkin’s creative activity. Byron’s poems were very popular at the beginning of the 19th century. Pushkin began to read them at the lyceum. He was under great influence of Byron’s works. Now let’s listen to the poem «Twilight» by Byron and then we shall answer the questions: «What is this poem about? What attracted Pushkin in Byron’s poems?»
In this poem Byron gave beautiful descriptions of nature, twilight is like music for him. He showed his soul and created beautiful women’s images…»
When Byron died, Pushkin devoted a part of his poem to him.
Another genius was taken
From us another mastermind
He fled by liberty lamented
Leaving the world his laurel crown
Roar, sea and seethe in stormy weather
Your bard he was, your very own.
But then Pushkin’s attitude towards Byron changed. He began to criticize Byron’s individualism and romanticism.
Imagine that you are in St.Petersburg. You are walking along the streets. And now you are swimming in the Neva but the water is cold and you are drying yourself with a towel. Now let’s go on!
Friends, what do you know about it? Примерные ответы учащихся: «Pushkin was attracted by the realistic descriptions in his sonnets. At that time Pushkin was creating his dramatic works and Shakespeare’s chronicles were an example for him.
But he didn’t want to show the struggle of individuals he wanted to show the struggle of people. And that’s why he was interested in W. Scott’s creative activity.
10. III период творчества Пушкина – Worship of Walter Scott.
W. Scott as Belinsky said was a discoverer of the zanre of «a historical novel». He described the history of classes. But W. Scott couldn’t show revolutionary traditions of his people as brightly as Pushkin did it. Pushkin developed his own realistic style.
Making up reviews of books by Pushkin.
Imagine that you must recommend some Pushkin’s books for reading to foreigners. Whose review is the most interesting?
12. Presentation of books’ reviews. –
