Used to

Еще один способ выражения событий, которые были в прошлом

(это не грамматическое время, а просто конструкция)

Особенности употребления

• Употребляется для выражения привычных, повторявшихся в прошлом действий, которые не происходят в настоящем. Эта конструкция не изменяется по лицам. После нее используется инфинитив смыслового глагола.
• Peter used to eat a lot of sweets.
• В прошлом Питер ел много конфет ( а сейчас нет ).

Вопросы и отрицания

• Строятся с помощью Did
• did not (didn’t)
• Did Peter use to eat many sweets?
• Mary didn’t use to stay out late.

Особенность конструкции *

• Вместо used to можно употреблять Past Simple, при этом смысл высказывания не изменится.
• She used to live in the countryside.
• She lived in the countryside.

Перефразируй данные предложения, используя оборот used to

• Действие, которое длилось в прошлом в момент, о котором мы говорим. Мы не знаем, когда оно началось и закончилось.

At three o’clock yesterday afternoon Mike and his son were washing the dog.

Употребление

• Действие, которое происходило в прошлом ( более длительное действие ) в момент, когда произошло другое более краткое действие. Для выражения второго действия ( более краткого ) мы употребляем Past Simple

He was reading a newspaper when his wife came .
