JAMES COOK ( 1728-1779).

GREAT EXPLORERS. JAMES COOK ( 1728-1779).

Captain James Cook was born on the 7 th of November, 1728 in Yorkshire, England. At the age of 17 he started working on a ship, he began to study different subjects: algebra, geometry, navigation and astronomy .

JAMES COOK (1757-1763).

• In June 1757 Cook joined one of the King’s ships as a captain’s assistant. During 1758-1763 he served in North America. His skills as a cartographer helped him to make a map of the west side of North America.

THE FIRST EXPEDITION.

In 1768 James Cook travelled to the Pacific Ocean as the leader of an expedition and its caption .

HIS SECOND TRIP.

• His second was in 1772. It lasted four years. He was the head of the expedition and led two ships Resolution and Adventure. Cook brought back a detailed map of New Zealand and a map of the Australian west coast. Scientists discovered plenty new kinds of animals and plants.

HIS LAST TRIP.

• In 1776 James Cook took his last trip on the ships Resolution and Discovery. He discovered the North Way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. It was difficult because of the weather. So the team stayed on some Hawaiian Islands for the winter.

CAPTAIN COOK’S DEATH.

• In 1779, there was a conflict with the native people of the islands. They killed Captain Cook. The expedition returned home in 1780 without their captain.

A great explorer.

• James Cook was a great explorer. He made the most complete maps of New Zealand and Australia. He changed people’s understanding of geography. His work was very important and useful for people from all over the world.
