New year’s celebrations around the world

People around the world celebrate the New year in different ways. They also celebrate it in different times, according their calendar or religious traditions

The international calendar changes on the 1-st of January, so most European countries celebrate New Year’s Eve on the 31-st of December

At New Year people look back over the past year and look forward to a good future

In Spain

Once there was an enormous grapes harvest and

the king decided to give everyone grapes

on the New Year’s Eve

Nowadays each time the clock chimes at midnight, you have to eat a grape. Most people can’t eat all the grapes before the clock stops chiming

They usually have all twelve grapes in their mouths,

so everyone starts laughing.

This is a good way to start the New Year!

In Japan

This country celebrates the New Year with traditional food. Families make rice cakes in a large bucket

The father uses a big hammer to smash the rice, while the rest of the family stir the rice with their hands

The children have to trust their dad, and he has to make sure he doesn’t hit their hands with the hammer

good relationships within the family

In China

The Chinese New Year does not fall on the same date every year. It comes between January,17th and February,19th

The New Year celebrations last for 15 days. There are fireworks and enormous parades in the streets, with a big party on the last night

Some people dress up as traditional Chinese dragons and dance in the streets

The others decorate their homes and put paper decorations on their windows

Every country has its own traditions for New Year.
