Meteors in Greece is one of the largest monastery complexes. Along with Mount Athos, there is its own administration, the monastic state is subordinate to the Metropolitan of Stage and Meteor.

The peculiarity of the complex lies in its inaccessibility – all the monasteries are located on the tops of steep cliffs that rise like huge pillars above the surface of the Pindus mountain range.

The name "Meteora" comes from the word meteorizo, which means "floating in the air". This is the most accurate description of the appearance of monasteries.

The very first hermitages in the mountains appeared in the XI century . Hermits fled from the hustle and bustle of the world in order to continue their service to the Lord without hindrance, and settled in simple mountain caves.
