• Irina Rodnina was the most successful pairs skater in history. Her three Olympic victories are a record for pairs skaters. She became the World Champion 10 times. She won eleven European pairs championships.

She was born on the 12 th of September, 1949 in Moscow.

Her father was an officer, her mother was a doctor.

Little Ira was ill very often. Her father was a good skier himself and he wanted his daughter to be a sportsman too. When she was only 5, she was taken to the skating-rink. She was skating for hours.

Her first coach was

Stanislav Zhuk.

In 1969

she became

a Europian and World Champion together with

Alexei Ulanov.

• In Bratislava, during a short programme the music …stopped. But they still became the World Champions. It was in 1974.She changed her coach. Since that time they have won all championships in Europe and the world.

She finished her career in 1980 after winning her third Olympic medal.

For two years she lived and worked as a coach in the USA.

Now she is a State Duma Deputy,She founded Children’s Special Foundation “Sports Republic”
